Here's my mix.
I referenced provided original mix mostly however, it seems already mastered and personally sounds bit too loud, so I set goal for punchy, compressed, and pronounced mix without artificiality while leave some room for mastering.
I don't have any funcy equipment for overprocessing , so it was bit hard to properly enhance the whole track.
The main vocal could be quieter, and whole mix could be more lush using reverbs but it' matter of taste.
I didn't MS processed except guitar bus, although played with panning a little.

Here is my submission

I had very little time to work on this mix so I set up my DAW (Pro Tools 10) to act as an analog mixing console (Specifically SSL) so that everything I needed was already set up and waiting to go. The Session workflow was inspired by" Andy Wallace's Deconstructing A Mix" tutorial from "Mix With The Masters"

I tried to create natural sound that grows from verse to chorus.

I used following sub busses
- drums and bass
- guitars
- bg voxes
- main voxes

First I made quick rough mix where I used just some small corrective eq moves. After that I started from main bus, continued with sub-busses, and then to tracks. In each round I’m using quite small eq adjustments. That process is quite iterative, so I do many small adjustments to busses also later.

Later in iteration process I also added compressors to each bus. I’m not using so much compressors on individual tracks. Some parallell compression with kick, snare, bass and main vox.

Most of the mixing time was spent with automations.

Hello :)

Here's my mix, tried as little/subtle 2-bus processing as possible (I personally can't mix without some bus plugs).. kept overall level to ~ -18 LUFS integrated... peaking @ about -4.5 dBFS

1st time also working with a pair of Sennheiser HD600 headphones (+manual, exact calibration) which I got about 1-2 months ago, with eq calibration I can totally recommend them for serious work.

Besides ValhallaDSP Plate and VVV, I also used quite a bit of 2caudio Breeze2 reverb which I recently got during a sweet deal and I think it's really great!

Go-to eq and comp is FF Pro-Q2 and Pro-C2, the new DC8C3 version also needs a special mention, totally in a new quality level this new version...
many cool plugs placed 'strategically' :D and almost every track group has parallel processing , will be happy to share extra info if someone's interested in something..

In the description I find it not interesting which companies you use but what you have done with it in the mix.

^ too much to write just to feel that people are not even reading... so instead, I'm opened to questions, if you or someone else find something interesting in my mix, feel free to ask :)

Hi,

i jumped in last minute although i wasn´t sure if i´m gonna make it, because i really liked this song!

So here you can find my contribution to this mix-challenge:

wav: https://www.dropbox.com/s/6ysuj7erb0ah8 ... c.wav?dl=0
mp3: https://www.dropbox.com/s/or4o2cbcp3jgz ... c.mp3?dl=0

Description:

Drums: i evened out any slight phasing between all tracks (as i remember, somebody already did an overal check - only 3 tracks where slightly off by a couple of samples...) otherwise the usual: small amount of EQ and Compression on the individual tracks - to find a compromise between the provided mix but also keep the organic feeling of the drums i worked more on the Room Track to let them stand out and make them more punchy.

Bass: nothing special going on, mixed the Amp and the DI Tracks carefully to find the right Balance, a bit eq-ing (Cut at ~65Hz for the and a shelf of 120 to and a 1076 to tame it a bit.

Intro-Guitars: just EQ, Compressor and a bit Modulation...

Distorted Guitars: Here comes the challenge, no matter waht i tried i couldn´t make them sit in the mix right. Low-End was missing and some difficult Resonances sticked out that interfered with the overall mix. So the main work was to even out the spectrum and add some more low-end by re-amping the DI-Tracks and mix them together with the amped Guitars in a way that the re-amped wouldn´t sound by themselfes, but rounding up the image (aka add the wanted low-end). Off course this creates all sorts of other issues like Phasing in particular, which i evened it out by moving the re-amped tracks a few milliseconds forward (the reaction time of the amp suggested it anyway) and added a slight dynamic pitch-shifting before they go into the amp.

Main-Vocals: editing the volume of the different sections of the song (Chorus, Verse tec.) before they go into the channel, otherwise only EQ (there was a weird frequency between 200 & 500Hz) and Parallel Compression - slighly De-Essing afterwards.

Overdubs and Background Vocals: the amount of tracks were a bit overwhelming, but made sense after i worked on the specific Groups while organizing their Stereo-image, Placement and Room-depth. Otherwise the usual EQing and Compression.

Mix-Bus: Everything goes through a MixChannel-Simulation, added a bit EQ for the overall Balance, followed by a Bus-Compressor with 2-3 dB Reduction max and Printed on a Tape-Simulation.

Overall: I always try to mix in a way i could reproduce the same results in a Live and Analog Environment, no Automation going on (except blending out the Reverb at the End of this mix to make the last Vocal Phrase stand out). Every single Instrument-track goes through a Analog based Chain (Tape-Sim > Mix Channel Emulation > Processing), mixed in the Box.

As a german myself i can really relate to the Songs Message, i really like the song and it was a lot of fun mixing it!!!

Many Thanks for this Opportunity!!!
