Hey. Thought the original tracks were pretty great so felt I didn't have to do too much, just wanted to beef it up a little and add some dirt. Nothing special with the mix, just used my usual template - All tracks have FF Pro, VMR with VCC and VTC Hollywood, Decapitator and Slate Tape. Plus Devil Loc Deluxe on the drums and vocals, Echoboy on gtrs and vocs, Little Plate on vocs, Slate Stress in parallel for drums and bass. Mix buss has TDR Nova, Virtual Mix buss, Slate Stress and KClip. That's about it.

Hi everyone, I don´t have much time right now to make a detailed explanation on the mixing process I used but I wanted to share my mix before I leave town, basically I dind´t use any of the DI tracks, added parallel saturation on the lead vocals and on the drum buss, went a little bit experimental on FX for the guitar solo. Other than that, pretty straight forward process eq + compression + reverb/delay. Again sorry for being so vague but I´m in a hurry right now. Cheers!

Hello All:)

This is my mix for the contest.
Hope you will enjoy, i liked working on it very much.

I worked on cubase 9.5.
The first issue i addressed is the drums. i listned to all of the tracks and heard that the guitar soung pretty nice, the vocal is already sounded a little bit distorted, but the drums had to get some punch, clarity and low end so the kick drums and snare will go out as in need to be in my opinion in this genre.

Drums -
First i checked for Phase issues, i didnt found any as i remember.
I did some eq (ssl channel waves), compression with cla 76, added some harmonics with distortion (stock plugins), and added some parallel compression with cla 76 on extreme values. The reverb i used for the drums is room reverb and a plate for the snare.

guitars -
I did some balance between the guitars and bass (freq and volume) so they will work together to get some nice low end.
Here also some eq , compression, distortion, delay.

Vocals-
I sent the main vocals to very short delay to make an intresting spring like reverb, i think it sounds good in this production. added some room reverb. eq, compression and distorion. The bv's eq is different and got it wider with doubler (waves).

Bass- eq, compression.

Stereo bus - Some compression with sslcomp of waves and added warmth with tape emulation of waves.

Hi everyone, here is my entry.

Guitars - Re-amped two panned DI guitar tracks. Edited broken solo manually to get rid of crazy frequencies and then added chorus.
Bass - having parallel distorted track (Cubase distortion) and compressed with Cytomic The Glue.
Drums - used gladly OH and Room and Snare and HH. Finally decided to trigger and replace toms and kick (Slate trigger).
Gated reverb on snare. OH and Room also got little compression before and drums main is compressed with SandBus.
Vocals - main vocal compressed twice. First pretty lightly by Cubase stock compressor and then harder with Softube CL 1B. Added EQ at 10k
with Softube PE 1C. There is also a delay on main vocal, lighly on verses and more audible in chorus.
Other things are Slate VCC channel on (almost) every track (different console emulations) and EQ's for cutting low muddy areas.
Master bus having another SandBus and Purple P1.

I applied some compression and eqing on individual tracks, same on the guitar and drum busses. I didn´t like the guitars panned hard left/right so I tried to keep them more narrow and worked with different chorus fx to create some space. Main vox is running through UAD´s 610 B preamp with Fairchild and LA-2A compression.
For the depth of the mix I used Echoboy Jr., spaceship delay and UAD Realverb.
I tried the "New York Compression Trick" for drums and bass and that really gave the whole mix the punch I was looking for.
At the end I used Waves AR Mastering Chain for „the glue“.

Don´t hesitate to ask any questions.

I had a lot of fun mixing this song!

Dear David Talbot and the Mix Challenge Community:
Here is my entry for MC051:
WAV: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ql3zbozib924c ... d.wav?dl=0
MP3: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ati47j2j8nyzd ... d.mp3?dl=0

Mix notes:
I tried to keep this as raw and gritty sounding as possible. All provided tracks were used. No samples were used. All tracks were high- and/or low-passed as to remove any unnecessary rumble and hiss. The Mix was done in Logic Pro X
  • Drums:
Kick tracks were EQ'd and compressed. Snare tracks were EQ'd and a transient shaper was used to bring out the attack on the top mic, and a little smudge on the bottom mic. Hi-Hat was EQ'd to tame the harshness and panned slightly to the left. Toms were EQ'd and compressed. High Tom is panned off to the left a bit, Low Tom is off to the right a bit, and the floor tom is hard right. Overheads were EQ's to tame the harshness. I was also experiencing some phase issues, so I used Ozone 8 Imager, split it in 3, and brought anything over 10.6kHz to mono, and from there down to 980Hz was pulled to about 75% mono. (not sure if this was the best way to tackle the phase issue, but it worked  ) The Room & Bleed tracks were EQ'd, compressed, and blended in to the rest of the drum mix. The Drum Buss was treated with EQ and parallel compression (TDR's SlickEQ and Kotelnikov, respectively). And finally a touch of plate reverb.
  • Bass:
Bass was EQ'd and fairly heavily compressed (I was getting about 3dB of gain reduction on the transients.) I then added an instance of iZotope Trash 2 for some saturation.
  • Guitars:
Guitar 1: Both tracks were panned hard left. The DI track was EQ'd, compressed, run through REDD37-51, and blended into the amped track.
Guitar 2: The amped track was panned hard right. The DI track was panned hard left, EQ'd, compressed, and bussed to an aux track with J37 for that tape delay you're hearing.
Guitar 3: Both tracks are panned center. The amped track was heavily compressed and driven on the output. The DI track was EQ'd, compressed, run through an instance of REDD-37-51, and blended into the amped track.
  • Broken gUit SOlo:
The track was run through REDD37-51. Then it hit Soundtoys Effect Rack loaded with Devil-Loc, Decapitator, EchoBoy, and Radiator. And finally a touch of room reverb. The whole thing was then bussed to an aux track with J37 for saturation.
  • Lead Vox:
The track was first loaded into RX 6 for some repairs. Adaptive phase rotation, de-clip, de-plosive, de-click were used and spectral repair was used to clean up the in-between areas. Then it was loaded back into Logic, where it got two instances of compression in series, followed by Decapitator for some grit. Finally a touch of room reverb was added.
  • BG Vox:
Ad Voc 1 was panned hard left, Ad Voc 2 was panned hard right and Hi pitch Chorus was center. The Hi pitch Chorus track was run through The Kings Microphone for a bit of color. All three were then run through a compressor, followed by Soundtoys Effect Rack loaded with EchoBoy, Decapitator, and MicroShift. And finally a plate reverb.
  • Ad voc Ending:
Based on the lyrics, I wanted to get a little chaotic here. The track was first run through TNT Voice Executor for that radio-like quality. Then I ran it through PanMan for the random triggered panning.

Each of these seven components were then bounced down to individual stereo tracks. Each track was loaded with an instance of Neutron 2 to detect and fix any frequency masking, as well as an instance of NLS Channel for color. The stereo out channel was loaded with NLS Buss followed by Ozone 8 for some overall EQ and a touch of compression (single-band) to "glue" the mix together.

Feel free to hit me up with any questions/ comments/ concerns. Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards,
Jeff

Hello All ,
Very nice song and vibe ,I tried to get my mix tight and punchy as passable .
Drums .
First Phase checked used auto align plugin ,
Kick in /out boost around 50hz used Rbass , emphasize the midrange area at about 2k roll off rumble 25hz
Snare T remove unpleasant frequency around 4k/ 1k just a little \compressed and saturation
Snare B just boost around 200hz and disstressor a bit
Hihat roll off around 350hz \no compression
H-Tom roll off around 40hz boost around 8k and 2k as well remove boxiness area /compression
M-Tom boost around 100hz and 3.5k as well F-Tom just filtered the sub area ,stereo Room used a saturation only
Mono room cut around 90hz and harsh area just a little
All drums track going to parallel drums bus . any feedback is welcome .

Here my submit .
