Hey there, I finally have time and space to enter a mix again.

I relied heavily on the SonitusFX suite that comes with Sonar.

First thing I did was get the kick to kick. I added some limiting, cut the highs, and a harmonic maximizer from BBE, bumping up the lows at around 50 Hz.

Next, I moved to the overhead, cutting a peak out of the spectrum at 629 Hz and taking out the lows. I also used a small limiter, and the same harmonic mazimizer, turning up the highs at 2.7 kHz.

I usually don't like room drums, but I added them super low, cutting out 1023 & 629 Hz, as well as the lows.. Not that it makes a difference at their level in the mix

For the toms, I cut out around 200 Hz (all needed different freq cuts) and added a harmonic maximizer, boosting 107.8 Hz, 64.8 Hz, and 53.1 Hz for toms 1, 2, and 3 respectively.

I put a limiter on the snare bottom, and for the top, i cut out 207 Hz and added a sonic maximizer (also BBE) and bumped up the "LO CONTOUR" a good bit and the "PROCESS" a little as well. I then made a bus for the entire set.

For the horns, I boosted the mids and lowered the lows on the lead trumpet, and made a more narrow peak for the trumpet, using Sonar's channel strip EQ, and did nothing to the sax. For the final chorus, I put some delay on the horns, panning one to the left and one two the right.

The Bass got a compressor, lows boosted with a sonic maximizer, and some multiband compression to tame the way it changes around the neck. I ran it through guitar rig at the last minute.

With the guitar, I copied the track and widened the sound with some EQ. I tried some amps, but it sounded best as it came. Added some compression too.

Next, I copied the vocal track and added a nice echo called Oilcan by Nomad Factory. It didn't fit the verses, so I only used it on the chorus. Then I added some reverb to the harmony and the double lead, and a lesser amount on the verse vocals. Lastly, I removed the mic pops with RX 6's De-plosive.

Finally, I put the mix through True Iron by Kazrog for a really nice saturation effect, modeling the UTC 108 X transformer. It's also on the bass and vocal tracks

Thanks for the opportunity, I loved mixing this song. Very funny lyrics.

-Mike

I used nothing on the master bus while mixing, I eventually just added a little bit of compression few minutes ago.

I moved the drums tracks to check and correct the phase issues, and I used gating to remove the bleeds.

I used automated delays on sections of the wind instruments, a little bit of reverb on back vocals, and opposite reverbs on guitar and keys.

There is a little flanger on the left reverb of the right keys, if it makes sense.

Everything else is just eq, panning, compression and automation.

Good luck everybody.

Hello here is my submission:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=16r9p9 ... 5Ha8lEHK9Y

I have been having issues in some of my mixes with getting instruments to have their own space, so I tried LCR mixing this time. I am still a beginner trying to improve with each mix. Please provide feedback if you wish.

I love steely dan and i tried to shape some of the mix around their vibe. One thing i found difficult is that the drum track is obviously quite a bit hotter and more up front then alot of steely dan mixes. i tried to find a bit of a middle ground.

I applied filters and slate tape simulation using protools audiosuite. I then tried to edit some of the issues with the clips removing some noise, etc. i used the fabfilter Pro G on most tracks to take care of the bleed, and also Pro-c more as a volume leveler.

I have tried using cla mixhub for eq, compression, and additional gating for most of the mix. I originally thought this plugin was more of a gimmick than anything, but to be honest it actually sounds good when adding to a track in the default setting. in that way i prefer it to the bx console e.

The bass has R-bass, Bf76 and MV2.

The guitar has an additional mxr orange phaser plugin added to add even more phasing. For Vocals i used Pro-DS on each track, as well as izotope nectar. I used Soundtoys echoboy/and Pro-R for the vox fx.

I did some parellel compression with 1176 on the room track as well as an VCA compressor on the whole mix.

Hello ,

This was very nice and easily listenable song.
Im new here and this is my first mix.

Overall nicely recorded imo so i didnt do much in terms of "fixing" ,,there was only volume automation in some parts.
Almost every track is started with SSL-E channel with various eq/comp/gate settings
Cleaned some of drums track with gate ,there was some parallel compresion on kick drum cause it needed little more punch. SSL Comp on drum buss.
Added guitar rig 5 on bass with barely audible change to original just little harrmonic enhancement.
Some sidechain eq on brass section to make room for vocals , also some paning to sides then to reverb channel.
Guitar duplicated and delayed slightly for subtle hass effect then sent to reverb.
Finally vocals brought up with PuigTec EQ ,SSL -E and compressed lightly with API 2500.

Mix bus only SSL comp (GLUE) with under 3 db attenuation.

Surely one of the most inspiring competition track’s that I’ve heard

I tried to do a smooth late 70’s sound.

On every track mainly basic eq, compression and delay tricks. These tracks didn’t need much mixing time.

Bonus treatment:

Kick and toms: I tried new BozDigital Sasquatch plugin to enhance the kick and toms

Snare: I tested what can be done with Noveltech Vocal Enhancer.

Bass: I cleaned up it with iZotope RX, parallel compression and also a little Airwindows SubsOnly.

Guitar: RX denoiser and little PM Dimension 3D

Keys: little bit flanger

Horns: Massey TapeHead on every track, and AirWindows Distance on sum-channel

Vox: parallel compression and saturation, Noveltech vocal enhancer.

hey! this is my first submission on this site. i have heard about the challenge just this morning, so this a "quick and dirty" mix. i used the original files. no samples! DAW: reaper. i did not master this mix, however i mixed into a comp on the master bus with 3db headroom and a loudness of -16 LUFS. this is a screenshot of the session so you can see plugins etc.

Image

NB: i used the slate trigger 2 plugin just for gating, not for adding sounds!

let me know what you think! good luck!
