Greetings!

Here is my submission for R1.
.WAV
.MP3

I will highlight only the key aspects of my approach.

Strings
— I heavily compressed the Low Strings track with Deflector (Sly-Fi) with distortion to make it sound more like a bass synth.

Drums
— I wanted the snare rolls to be much more present than in the original mix and at the same time prevent them from being too dominant. I used some low passing, mild compression for a little more punch, a dedicated reverb.

Vocals
— I used only one mic.
— I used soundbrigade to control resonances, Manny EQ to reduce some of the midrange and add top end. Compressed with Novatron (fast settings) and McDSP la-2a emulation. Had a 110ms single tap delay as an insert.

Reverbs
— I used two reverb busses: one for ambiance (dominant early reflections), one for tone (dominant late reflections).
— Most of the tracks were sent to the both busses in different proportions.

Mix Bus
— I used two tapes emulators in a row to give the sound a little compression and a pinch of additional depth by affecting transients.
— Used alpha compressor (2db compression)
— Finished with Ozone eq to slighly alter overall tone and used ISP limiter at -1dbfs just for safety (though I think my highest peak was around -6 or so).

Have a great week!

Thanks for the opportunity to mix that beautiful and emotional song!
Here is my take on it:
WAV https://www.dropbox.com/s/c7v6wdzu0878l ... r.wav?dl=0
MP3 https://www.dropbox.com/s/skoi91h559us7 ... r.mp3?dl=0
So I used Ableton Live as a DAW and Fabfilter plugins pack (FabFilter Proq3, Pro-C2, Pro-R, Pro-DS)
Also I used Voxengo MSED. Glue Mid and Side file into the buss, then put mid to the left and side to the right and adjusted levels of the each part in MSED itself while mixing.
Lots of dynamic EQing was been done using Fabfilter Pro-q3, it makes mix more rich but still keep an emotinal part of the record.
Two reverb aux busses by Pro-R, one short and another a bit longer. Some Delay for shaker also was been set into aux buss.
Master buss - just hipassing 20hz with Proq3 and that's it.

Hi everyone,

Thank you David and team at mix challenge for this excellent song!

Here is my submission:

The very interesting part of this (my thought) is the verse-chorus,
the fact that there are many M/S tracks too.
In the beginning, i was wondering a song full of emotion but guidelines say it should sounds real,
my bad, so, i decided to mix it with only Mid signal, but it sounds weak that way, i processed them all.
Dreamy, dark, distinct drums and guitars, these details are nice but i think low strings are now transparent, maybe i am too bad or should i automate the volume?
but i like my end result. Do not worry with the electric guitar, i gave it a retro hi-end aspect, a lo-fi effect. ;)
Saddest thing (but it is ok), cymbals are missing so the intro tends to be dark.
Last, the sound is a bit crispy but i think it is a mastering ready tho.
Level: +2.9dB max vu meter with -12dB reference loudness

If you want to see my mix sheet:

Anyway, it is a good marching song, i see others methods and i am very happy with their mix. Well done guys!
Cheers!

Hello @all!

First a big thank you for compyfox making these competitions possible and of course to David Paul Page for giving us this beautiful song to mix!

So here is my take on this mix:

WAV 44.1kHz/24 bit https://www.dropbox.com/s/4qyncxeii543p ... a.wav?dl=0

I can provide an mp3 file too if needed...

Mixed in Cubase 10 Pro

I used the traditional way of mixing M/S files with a 3 channel setup mainly for the drums and the guitars. For the vocals I used Voxengo MSED.
Every Instrument or Vocal had it's own subgroup for further processing.
I first did some pre-eqing with CraveDSP EQ on every channel/group for some overall tonal balance/toneshaping which was followed by Gullfoss to tame some remaining unwanted resonances (yes, I'm lazy :-D )
Next was Slates Virtual Mix Rack with New York, Hollywood and London preamps followed by either the SSL EQ or the Neve EQ and some other tools from Slate (Trimmer, Revival, 1176 etc. depending on the source)

The acoustic guitars each needed some additional help from MV2 and then were routed to a buss with some slight compression, bx_control for some gentle widening and an aux track with some nearly audible reverb from Orilriver...I did some automation for the little slide solo

The electric guitar needed some special treatments to fit my taste. I used the Fender Bassman from Plugin Alliance and added some slight tremolo effekt and Nembrinis "Analog Rack Cleaner", a simple high/low pass with an extra tube stage for some eytra "warmth"

E bow guitars first were routed to a group and then fed into an long ping pong delay followed by a gentle auto pan to get some movement

The high strings also were routed to their own stereo group and I added a slow phasing effekt for some movement.

The low strings needed some special treatment to fill the missing bass part so after some heavy eqing I added some gentle saturation, and a combination of Waves Maxxbass and Waves LoAir

For the drums I mainly used Slates VMR as stated above and some Compression from Overlouds GEM Comp670 for the drum group. Kick and tom had some additional Waves LoAir for sub lows, as I wanted to reproduce kind of a mixture of distant big marching drums and cannonballs (No, don't expect cinematic FX here!) A gentle amount of Cubase built in brickwall limiter was used on kick and tom

Backing Voc were routed each to a subgroup with Voxengo MSED followed by Waves Vocal Rider and then grouped together with some Compression from VLA-2A (Black Rooster Audio) , widening (bx_control) and reverb (early reflections) from Orilriver.

"Hurrr Harr" Voc had a similar treatment.

For Matts vocals I've chosen a mix of both mics, favorising the 47, as there was some saturation on the 251 which I found not very pleasing for my taste. Vocal Rider helped me to get the levels even and I used some clip gain to balance out the overlapping parts of the verse and chorus vocals. For the compression I used a VLA FET (Black Rooster Audio) followed by VLA-2A. Vocals were send to an FX channel with Soundtoys Primal Tape for a slight slapback-type delay which was then fed into Eventides SP 2016 for a small room reverb.

On the master buss only Gullfoss was used for some gentle taming. No extra compression or limiting. Max level is about -17 LUFS

Did I forget something...? If you need to know something just ask!

Cheers to all :-)

Hi all,

Here is my submission -

WAV
mp3
Screenshots

For MS I have used copy/paste/invert phase method. Nothing interesting about mixing to tell  All pretty standard. On master track I used a bit of saturation and some gentle compression. If you have any question I will glad to answer.

Good luck to everyone!

Cheers

Hello everyone,
Thank you for the song and opportunity, very emotional!
there are many M/s tracks so I used the famous Voxengo MSED plugin. I processed them all to the stereo pair tacks group
to save some CPU and space at the same time. I usually highlighted the drums first and if anyone needs more info about my mix it's will be glad to explain.

Drums.
Kick: my first plugin is gate just to control a room tone a little bit, there is a resonance tone @ 126hz
used the notch eq to control it a little, compression and saturation

Kick far/room: another notch eq @110hz to remove some of the nasty room tone/cut -3db around 250hz / boost 3db around 2k
compression and saturation. I made 1 aux track for both kicks, used 670 puigchild compressor.

SnareT: removes room tone @200hz, boost around 4k and 12k.

SnareB: used E console plugin boost 3db @8k 2db @3k cut -3db around 300hz, Send it both snare tracks to 1 aux and used a specture eq for coloring.

F Tom: HPF cut around 40hz and compression

Room: HPF around 70hz cut around 400-500hz and 4k as well no compression or saturation.

My submission.
