hi!

thanks for running this challenge and providing the recordings, franz!

here's my mix:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/x3s3xymhq42zj ... 0.wav?dl=0

i grouped the instrument sections (trump/sax/drums etc.) and used plugins on those groups.

drums: eq boost 20khz & dip 5khz - parallel devil-loc - limiter - reverb (plus eq and rbass on the kick, eq on the snare and eq high/lowpass, de-esser on the OH.)
bass: mv2 - 1176 - rbass - saturation - limiter
guitar: eq high/low pass - dynamic eq - mv2 - limiter - reverb
piano: eq high/low pass - gate - mv2 - 1176 - bx_stereomaker
brass/winds: highpass - gate - 1176 - eq boost 20 khz & dip 3 khz - limiter - plate reverb

stereo buss: presswerk - fairchild 670 (no comp, just color), eq +2db shelve >8 khz, J37 for some mojo, limiter to bring it up to -16LUFS. there is no actual limiting going on...

i would have split the snare-track into 2, hits and rimclicks, in order to treat them seperately, because there is so much spill from the HH: gate on hits + a lot of eq for more presence. but i did not have the time for additional edits. should i make it to round 2, that's very likely something, i would adjust ...

mixed with reaper 6.01
i tried to stay close to a "live" situation, so no automation, no trigger, almost no edits (snare phase-adjusted to OH, trombone-solo a little louder)

any comments welcome!

cheers, dirk.

Hi everybody, Mr Fox, Cher Client,

What I really like in the Mix Challenges is the wide variety of genres, and I really enjoyed that Big Band opportunity.

I did not search for any reference track because I wanted to keep in mind a feeling connection I have in my memory with 20 years old ONJ (Orchestre National de Jazz) albums listening sessions. Of course maybe I should have! But music is about feeling right?

I also took into consideration the approach of the the original mixing, and tried to keep it that same way: bright and punchy with strong macrodynamics.

So I applied my trusty hard won Metric Halo Channelstrip on mostly every tracks or busses, and it did what it did with Eq and dynamics.

I applied compression on the 2BUS, along with parallel saturation.

There is saturation and compression on bass, a little bit of editing too.

I setup a Room and Ambiance reverb bus for brass elements, and some automated tape echoes for the guitar.

The rest is AUTOMATION!!! lol I even had to rest my hand sometimes because I just work with one fader.

Good luck everybody and see you soon!

For the EQ, I cut lots of low end out of pretty much everything. In the cons.jpg screenshot, you can see what I did to each instrument. There was some fine tuning on the Kick, piano, bass, guitar, solo trombone, that isn't pictured. It was all done to give some separation between each other.

I used two different reverb settings and sent different groups to each.

I added a cabinet simulator to the guitar to give it a bit more shape, threw some dynamic EQ on the clarinet to tame that high note, used some light compression on a couple of tracks just to keep them relevant when things got going loud, but that is as extreme as I got.

The panning was a chore of matching octaves on opposing channels. If two horns were playing the same note, I nudged one left and the other right by the same degree, then stepped outward with each horn. It sort of worked with the sax, so I matched the guitar with the bleed, until the solo kicks in. The same approach was done with the trumpet and the clarinet. The trombone didn't work exactly the way I wanted it, but it did work in the end.

Only the guitar track has automation, everything else is exactly the same all the way through.

Is there anything else that I need to add? This is my first post.

Hey!

Here is my mix.

This was a whole other challenge for me, as Im not familiar with the genre.

The Drums all got EQ and some light comp going to keep them im place, some reverb for dimension. Bass is edited, compressed and eq-ed. the piano got some heavy eq going and lives in the same reverb as the other instruments. all the brass channels are grouped, panned to taste and have eq, comp and verb on them.

on the 2 bus is a comp and some saturation and tape emulation going on. :)

Cheers, Phil
