Hi all!

At first I want to say thanks for the challange!. I was looking for a way to improve my mixing skills and this is what I found. I never really mixed any track that isn't mine. I do (or try to) mix my own tracks but it's not the same.

The idea behind my mix was simple, nothing fancy. a bit clean up, and go for synth'ish wibe.

Things I done to this track:
Drums - TDR Nova as EQ, Drawmer S73 comp, and stock transient shaper (I'm using Bitwig)
Vocals - I manualy edited bigger volume changes, 2x Parallel SphereComp doing rest, and Nova again.
Bass- I focused on Omnisphere Bass, Nova EQ, Neutron Elements for comp and exciter.
Synths - small touch with EQ, Ozone Elements on MusicBox for boosting highs in Side mode.
Strings - no plugins, just Pan and Gain changes.
FX - only stock Filter for automation
Sends - didn't touch recorded reverbs so just a small ammount of Little Plate
Master Bus- SphereComp on Buss mode, J37 Emulation, tons of metering stuff...

Thats it. Some help with feedback would be nice.

Good luck everybody!

Hi Everybody, Very cool song and a tribute to Vangelis. So i dusted off some of my old discs and found some good reference tracks that I could A/B against for eq and balance. My approach was cinematic making sure the mix builds from start to finish (very much like Vangelis mixes). I used some spacial processing on the transition effects from Plugin Alliance and also three different reverbs from Waves,Eventide, and Abbey Road. (these were used to add size and space). I used FairChild and SSL compressors were needed. Eq's varied from Joe Meek. Eddie Kramer, and Dangerous Music. Audio levels avg -14Lufs. No auto-tune or editing of tracks. Below you will find my link. Thank you for providing this opportunity_Les

Hey there!

Firstly just want to say great track. Very cinematic and has a real epic feel to it. It was a joy to work on.

In regards to the processes I used, I found the arrangement to be quite busy, so I had to do a lot of EQ sculpting to make space for everything. Most tracks were low / high passed to clean them up, I then used a Pultec Eq mainly to push the frequencies that I wanted to feature closer to the front.

I did use a gate on a track or two to clean up reverb trails etc, and added my own Reverb using the HReverb from Waves.

I really wanted to feature the beautiful singing voice in the song, and did this by creating space in the centre of the mix by pushing pads, strings, backing vocals and effects as wide as I could.

I also utilised some panning automation to keep a sense of movement in the piece.

Other than that the only real changes I made was to add stereo delays to some of the backing vocals and a little sidechaining to duck the backing vocals behind the main vocals when the crescendo of the piece kicks in. This also gives it a sense of movement.

Anyway here's my link to my submission. Thanks!
Ciaran

Hi all,
thanks for the music and oportunity. It was a pleasure to mix this interesting song.

Here is my submission:
MP3: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qqmmdav2y74p6 ... y.mp3?dl=0
WAV: https://www.dropbox.com/s/dwrnnvyad1ybg ... y.wav?dl=0

I mixed the song ITB with Studio One 4, using mostly Acustica Audio (both Acqua and Nebula), Plugin Alliance and Fab Filter plugins.
Every group of instruments was routed to a dedicated subgroup, and processed acordingly. Little EQ and compression on single channels, but heavy lifting processing was done on buses and subgroups.
In situations where printed reverbs were not fitting to my conception, I used Accusonus to control them. Also used a little bit of gating, editing and automation.

Thanks to everyone involved and best regards,
A.
