Hi to all!

I always do a rough mix first to get to know the song better, understand the parts, and get the feeling of how the elements.

Then I get into the processing of stuff. I don’t use a lot of plugins and do sound-engineering secrets and methods. Just an EQ, Compressor and Big Reverbs for this song.
Final I did automation for the fade in and the fade out

Hope you like it!

MC 083 - December 2021 - Sun Returns by John Henderson

First of all, thanks for Mister Fox for hosting the challenge, and Johnny_Fingers for the beautiful song!

For this mix my focus was in creating space for the vocals.

The acoustic Guitar 1 had an Eventide Precision Time Delay with 0.19 ms of delay, which made the acoustic guitars more wide, since they were hard panned. Both were eq’d and compressed using Softube Summit Grand Channel.

The bass guitar received Summit Channel, Waves RBass for low end, Kramer Tape and Decapitator for light saturation.

The guitar harmonics and lead received Waves SSL Eq, Softube Trident A-Range and Decapitator.

Vocals were edited for better time alignment, and got Vocal Rider, Waves VEQ3, Softube Drawmer 73, Waves CLA 76, Decapitator, light Waves RenDeEsser, and CLA Vocals plugin (chorus track only).

I sent vocals to a bus and had the electric guitars compressed with side chain fed from this bus using RenCompressor, to let the vocals a little clearer during the guitar playing.

For effects, electric guitars got a little Eventide H910, for some delay and chorus.

Vocals were sent to Renaissance Verb (plate), and Waves Super Tap for ping pong delay.

Instruments and vocals were bussed with Waves Kramer Tape for each group. Those buses then fed a room reverb, provided by Waves IR-L with Bricasti impulse responses.

Mix bus got Plugin Alliance Bettermaker for gentle filtering and eq, Waves Abbey Road RS 124 bus compressor, and Oxford Inflator for saturation.

The mix has been checked with Expose app for loudness rules compliance.

Thanks!

Hi.
Here's my mix:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/wp1tzrf5s7s6k ... N.wav?dl=0

My goal has been to make the song more brightly and to make it have it's own room.

I have cleaned the tracks individually and aligned the second voice to get a more choesive sound.

My idea with the harmonic and lead guitars was to create a more dynamic song using stereo movement with different phases in each one. I loved the result.

My mix bus has some excitement and glue compression.

Hello all!

This song was a nice challenge and I really appreciate the emotion within it. It tells a nice story and even has a bit of an instrumental jam, what's not to like?! I felt like this song needed a little clean up, but mostly it needed to feel natural and what it already was. Just a few notes occasionally that needed some small adjustments to make it feel more together.

Mostly I cleaned up the audio by removing some background noises, doing the old cut and move on the vocals to align them and the background vocals, I used a little Logic Flex as well to make some phrases a bit smoother on timing.

Vocals: Metatune, Logic Flex Pitch, Logic EQ, Slate VMR, Eiosis DeEsser, Slate Fresh Air, Slate MO-TT, Slate VTM, Liquid Sonics Lustrous Plates, D16 Group Repeater
Acoustic Guitars: Logic EQ, Kilohearts Transient Shaper, Slate MO-TT, Slate VMR, Logic Multipressor, Slate Fresh Air, Liquid Sonics Lustrous Plates
Electric Guitars: Logic EQ, Neural DSP Archetype Cory Wong, Slate VMR, Slate Fresh Air, Slate VTM, Slate MO-TT, Liquid Sonics Lustrous Plates
Bass: Logic EQ, UA Ampeg SVT VR Classic, Slate VMR

A decent amount of sidechaining compression at certain parts to bring out the vocals and lead guitars more.

Hi, I mixed with great pleasure this song that recalls atmospheres of other times, which have never faded.

I wanted to keep the sounds and dynamics as natural as possible, as they were played.
To underline the detachment between the sung parts, I created an abundant spatiality in the guitar solo, respecting its dynamics (which grows as it approaches the vocal).
Very small interventions have been made on the individual sounds, just a de-esser on the voice and a minimum of equalization on the bass.

I hope you enjoy this approach. The mix is here:

Hi!

Here's my mix. My goal was to create the space to surround the vocals, trying to place things on the sides. Reverbs, delays and guitar doubles. Also, I've tried to bring upfront the fretless singing, with some automation and subtle efx.

In the master, I've used a compressor and tape plugin. Sidechain between vocals and efx, and also between guitar and efx. Eqing and reamp process are done on almost every channel with some analog gear.

Hope you like it! Best of lucks to all!

hi thank u for letting us mix ur song.

Here's my mix
https://www.dropbox.com/s/o9witarxixdom ... F.wav?dl=0
Lufs -16.3
if u want to hear it in full scale, please add 5.5dbs. done in logic.

AC - DBX560A, eqed, WOW control, R4 for reverb, and tdr lim 6 (high frequency)
Bass - dbx 560A and a lot of limiting
BV - pitch shift -5 +5 dbx 560Ax2 waves desser and tdr lim 6 (high frequency)
LV - DBX 560a, waves desser, manual desser, and tdr lim 6 (high frequency). R4

lots of automation.

fun facts: it was a very very hard mix due to consonants sounding very offending. after i did many de-essing, the mix came together and i was able to put a lot of reverb. there is also noise in some files, so to hide that, i added waves j37 noise in the begging, middle, and in the end, so the noise doesn't suddenly fade. i think if u bring the song to full scale or limit them, many mixes will show a lot of esses.

thank u!
