MIX CHALLENGE - MC081 October 2021 - Winners announced

Hi Everyone,

Here's my entry for Round 2 of Mix Challenge 081.

The first thing that I did was to realign the lead vocal so that it was in the correct position

Then I set to work on making the kick punchier. To do this I added a parallel to the kick channel which was as follows:

OverTone DYN4000 (SSL Compressor) - Ratio 3:1, Slow Attack, Fast Release
Softube Transient Shaper - +10dB Punch, -12dB Sustain
Newfangled Punctuate - Make It Pop preset

All of this created a very strong kick transient which I then mixed in with the main kick.

Finally, I swapped bx_refinement for AirWindows Acceleration2 on the mix bus because I think it makes the cymbals sound more natural.

48kHz/24-Bit
-17.5 LUFS (int.)
-1. 5dBTP

Thanks for picking my to advance to round 2. Its an honor!

I've had some tech difficulties (blew a monitor). I made the changes with headphones that I'm not too familiar with.

First I made the toms more audible in the intro and also made some balance changes.

Great Job everybody thus far on this endeavour!

I couldn't figure out why my mix, according to Mister Fox, was 23 bit and very low level. I just about passed the bar and I didn't go through. But now I think I know why. I might've bounced ut without the Mixbus chain. My only excuse is that my better half turned grandma last week and it's been a bit hectic with everything up to that point.

Anyways, I thought I'd post the actual mix I intended to do. Feel free to critique it. As all first mixes I make it's quite a static mix and I don't do much automation. I'm still quite happy with how it sounds.

I changed a bit a guitar sound and cut off harshness.
In overall i added a little bit character to drums.

I made some adjustments on the Kick adding the Classic Clipper by Ik Multimedia, snare also has a little dynamix eq on the hi freq, toms I they now have the Rbass to sound bigger, re tweaked the vocals with a dynamix eq and cleaned some mouth smacks with Rx9, bass has more hi freq, guitars more level and some new automations.

though I thought my R1 mix was good given the material, I was kind of embarrassed after hearing some mixes.

I redid the mix. I Reamped the guitars (that was the biggest change).

I also listened to the reference tracks, and they were not very much punchy, it seems it's the style. I also put emphasis in the guitars.

for the vocal treatment, it might be a little honky, but there are some weird "melodyne (tuning)" artifacts. if eqed the way I want it, the vocal gets a little lost when the artifacts appear.

I also added reverb, automated, and cleaned the tracks better.
