The tricks with tempo automation, it so rarely than anybody doing so.
Apart from not being able to fully understand this sentence (are some words missing?)
Well, it's just me, writing a reveiw at 3 am on a language that isn't my native.

I mean it's about tempo variations that is characterful for a classic rock era that people (for the most cases) don't use nowdays. It helps the track to sound more alive and "human", and also it is a clewer method of bringing drive and tension. I like when people experiment with that...

Before I'm posting the results for SWC051 later this night, I was contacted through a Discord server I am part of and asked to please forward the following feedback.

TheManPF from the 'Dwelling of Duels' audio community wrote: Esteve Corbera - Diversio Guitarrera
Is the title missing an N? Simple but fun, although it needs some more layers to it, feels like there is a base but not much else going on, also for a song that mentions guitars it doesn't have much guitar in it.

alavault - M1
This is really cool, it's heavy but also soothing in a way, almost mystical, the mood is very well balanced with the cleans, the choirs and the synths. Some good vocals would really make this track bring it home, but as it is it's top notch.

erictracks - Uptowner
This is chill and fun, it has a certain groove to it that gives it charm, at parts it feels like there could be more stuff going on, but it still holds up pretty well. Nice solos.

GMoneh - Back in Time
This has a really fun rhythmic pattern to it, I love it. The singing sounds like it's coming from a non-native english speaker, but it gives it a particular accent that I find enjoyable, good performance, would appreciate a lyric sheet.

becsei gyorgy - Crumbling World
The growls caught me off guard, they're nicely performed, but they clash too much with the style of the rest of the song which sounds too calm for it. The instrumental is pretty cool especially with the synths going on. Once again, a lyric sheet would be nice.

Arelem - Speak the Truth
This is great, love the vocal performance, the voice is raspy and sounds like it has an effect going on that gives it a lot of attitude. Again, no lyric sheet? Bummer.

VCA-089 Desert Machines
Very playful drum patterns keep this very interesting, I like the synths in relation to the machine theme. I like how it keeps things varied througout, although the lead guitars feel a little buried.

A Future in Noise - A Very Tragic Little Song
Instrumental is very happy-go-lucky to fit the title, though I wonder if that's intentional. Kind of simple, but it's still fun, I like the changes in tempo especially. Please give lyrics!

I tend to agree with the overall feedback that there is a lack of written down lyrics. I'd also love to see these posted in the future. Which is especially helpful to those that are non-native English speakers. :educate:

I hope this feedback was helpful to you:

SONGWRITING COMPETITION - SWC051 November 2021 - Winners announced

#53

Post by Mister Fox »

Ladies and Gentlemen, here are the results of Songwriting Competition 51

 The winners podium consists of:
  1. @alavault (79 pts) -- Sole Winner
  2. @VCA-089 (74 pts)
  3. @A Future in Noise (73 pts)

Apologies for the waiting time, this is not an automated process.

<4 participant rule is not in use (staff comments and votes, my vote would count as bonus)
We have 0 disqualifications (due to lack of feedback)
We have 0 withdrawn entries
We have 0 votes after the deadline - therefore no -5 points penalty
We have 0 users that tied
  • becsey_gyorgy has 1x10pts, 0x9pts -- Arelem has 0x10pts, 1x9pts -- becsey_gyorgy therefore scores higher
"Sole (License) Winner" rule does apply - 1-position Winners Podium (=< 8 participants prior to the deadline)

STATISTICS SHEET:
Overview of Submissions (PDF - updated: 04-DEC-2021, full sheet)

 ! Bonus Info
Short info:
I am using Wavelab 10 for batch analysis, then I manually port the CSV export to a Microsoft Excel/Open Office Calc sheet with custom layout (this is not an automated process).

As pointed out in this post from SWC047 / July, Wavelab has different tolerances for dBTP max analysis compared to tools like iZotope RX, Youlean Loudness Meter, NUGEN Audio VisLM, etc. To find a common ground, I've implemented "allowed tolerances" (just like with the Mix Challenge). These are based upon allowed offsets mentioned in the white papers for EBU R128 and ITU-R BS.1770-4.

Since Statistic Sheets are here to stay (for both the Mix Challenge and Songwriting Competition), I will follow up this topic with an official Rule Addendum post sometime during Q4 2021 (see Rule Book section). If possible, always stay below the tolerances.

As usual, I did list/analyze alternative releases (MP3s and FLAC). If you've submitted your entry in multiple file formats, the statistic sheet will focus on the uncompressed material first (WAV), then FLAC, then MP3. The higher the quality, the less possible loss on bonus points for "Loudness Specs" due to offsets introduced by a used CODEC. In this case, FLAC and MP3 are merely for information purposes.

Here are the results as chart in image form:

Thank you so much for your participation.

 License selection:

We'll now perform with the usual. Selecting licenses is handled in public. Please select one license/company out of the pool (in order of the winners podium) and mention it in this thread, then (important) please get in touch with me (via PM) with your full name, email address and your license selection.

As usual - you're not forced to pick up anything. You can pass and therefore offer more to select for the next person in line (if there is a spot existing / not available for "sole winner" mechanic). Just let all participants/winners/the staff know in a timely manner. Once one company has been selected, it's out of the pool for the next person on the podium.

Feedback about the "Songwriting Competition" is welcome (please do so here).

See you in in the next challenge!

Congratulations to the winner.
Thank you all for participating and providing enriching comments.
Also thanks to @TheManPF for comment. The title does not lack an N. In Catalan it is without N, in Spanish it does carry the N.I liked this comment.
