Hey all, I'm early this time!
That's because I was really motivated to make this piece of art shine. So thanks for providing the song Graureiher, its been a pleasure! Great songwriting and lyrics and a perfectly fitting "Westernhagen"-voice, love it!
But man, the timing! The problem is the sloppiness is really distracting from the story, so I did a lot to move things around, used the acoustics as a guide since I feel they hold up the groove best and moved lots of drum hits (mainly) and some bass notes closer to them. Also the harp and guitar solo felt really rushed, so i moved some notes back as well. Guys you need to relax!
I muted some parts in verse three to give it a break and hopefully make the arrangement more interesting. But this is only meant as a suggestion and can be easily undone with some mouse clicks if that's not working for you.
All vocals were left alone, no tuning here at all.
Mixing-wise it would be too much to go into detail here, but as ever, if someone's interested I'll be glad to answer questions.
Cheers

Hi,
funny story idea but wow - what a timing mess! I didn't even bother to start correcting. In my opinion re-recording would be the only option to get a better timing, or you could chop the life out of the song and yourself. So let's say it's character and in a weird kind of way it suits the song and its story.
I wanted to give it a nice little grungy Rock'n'Roll vibe but not reinvent the wheel. I basically stayed true to the recording, tried to not make it worse and somehow work together.
If you really want Westernhagen out of this - sorry, not gonna happen (I think you're well aware of that)

Hello!
I know the client want the drums to be the strong point, but after all my tests I want to show him something more open, fresh and natural, because I think it is best sonically to improve the strong point of his tracks, instead of fighting with it.
I had to edit the rhythm of some of the acc guitars, but I left the general fluctuations of the song untouched.
The process:
I sent the kicks in a bus and applied EQ, compression, artificial 50Hz, transients enhancement.
Snare top is multed with different SSL channels with eq gate and compression. Snare bottom has an SSL channel for the same kind of treatments.
Little eq on hihat.
Overheads are eQed and compressed.
Rooms are totally natural.
Drum bus has pultec eq, and I set a parallel drum bus with compression, gate, reverb, saturation and eq.
Bass has saturation and eq.
Lead Vocal: LA3A compression, Deessing, EQ and multiband compression. Then aux tracks to add delays, reverbs and stereo wideners.
Acc guitar have reaeq and Pultec Eq, electric guitars have the same plus bus compression.
All guitars are sent to a last bus with a bit of reaeq.
Guitar solo has just Eq and delay.
Harmonica has eq, reverb and stereo widening.
Choir has eq and reverb.
Back vocals have eq and stereo widening.
Than on my 2bus I set eq and compression.
The biggest part of my work is automation, I think it brings clarity and helps with the little technical imperfections played by the musicians.
Enough talking, here are the tracks:

See you soon, good luck everybody.

I chose not to chop the parts up to sync everything because I think it's got a great live vibe going.
As usual, I ran all the channels through Britson Channel and BX Console G and all busses through Britson Buss
Lead Vox - a lot of automation to smooth it out & keep it balanced. A bit of delay (Echo Boy Jr) and Reverb (MTurboReverb - Silver Plate), with the verb side-chained compressed to keep it out of the way.
BV Vox - no processing other than high pass in Britson Channel.
Bass - side chain triggered by Kick buss to duck certain frequencies using MSpectralDynamics. I copied the bass and ran it through Disto-S (SKnote) for some compressed distortion and blended it with the original Bass.
Drums:
I created a "Faux Room" rather than use the Room Mics in the Alternate Folder - a lot less vocal bleed!
Kick - a lot of gating & high pass to tighten it up. Added some top end to help it cut through the mix.
Snare - MDynamicEq & Gatey Watey to cut the overtones and ringing on the SnTop. I used the bottom "as is". On the Snare Buss I used Burnley 73 for some punchy drive, DeBleeder to clean it up, PSP FETpressor to tighten it up, then ReaEQ to roll off the lows & highs.
Hihat, Overheads & Front - Just some EQ in BX Console G along with FETpressor on the OH's to control the snare.
AGuits - just EQ & mild comp in Console G. Then I doubled the tracks in the Chorus (just the running down line) and used panning to add interest.
EGuits - pretty much the same. Doubled them in the Chorus to accentuate the up line. Also added a little chorus to the doubled EGuits for interest.
EGuit Solo - re-amped using Boogex (Voxengo), UltraChannel (Eventide) for stereo widening & delay, then Lindell 6X-500 for a little more saturation.
Harmonica - Blended in the Harmonica Room with the original track. Also added a bit of Ozone Imager on the room track to add some width. Sent the Harmonica Buss paralleled through a little reverb(MTurboReverb - Concert Hall).
