Post by Mister Fox »

Welcome to the General Gossip thread for the Mix Challenge.

Want to talk about things that came up during the game that are a bit off-topic, neither are they really fitting for Production Techniques?
Got a question beforehand that is not covered in the Rules or FAQ?

Then this thread is for you. Please type away. :educate:

By joining the Mix(ing) Challenge, you agree to adhere to the given Rules and Guidelines (see post #6).

This thread is only for general feedback and constructive criticism, talk "overall game" topics (slight off-topic), ask questions if anything is unclear / not explained in each game thread already, and/or not covered in the FAQ, etc.

Any form of (ongoing) complaints / destructive criticism / harassment (e.g. "staff lecturing") will result in an instant delete of your post without any further warning. If you continue to push the matter, then only one formal warning will be addressed, after that your account will be banned. Please keep things civil.

This thread will be reset on a regular basis. (currently: every August)

Hi All,

I have a couple of suggestions for the website - ignore them if they're too difficult to implement however I think that some might find them helpful.

Firstly, could we have a countdown clock on the front page for the second/third rounds.

Secondly, could the link to the current challenge remain on the front page until the challenge is completed.

Cheers,

Chris

Interesting and valid feature requests.

One of the requests is easy to pull off. The other, not so much (as this would need a complete re-code of certain sections). I will look into what's possible, but won't make any promises. (especially within a timely manner)

Does a mix have to be available the moment its uploaded or is the 21st or end of game the end of submission!?

Ideally, the mix should be accessible even before you post on the forum. However, I will check/collect content as it comes in (to stay on top of things, and to catch possible re-uploads), and once more after the submission period has ended.

If your entry is not accessible by the time the deadline has been reached, and I start to collect the material for the Statistic Sheet, it will be "tagged OUT".

Is this new statistic sheet trying to say I didn't use the correct use of underscore again?

If so, I would have someone pay more close attention to who is checking these... I meticulously examined this because it got flagged in round 1. I figured out that you use two underscores for round 1... round 2 has the double underscores and a single underscore used only in front of R2...

I know my filename is on point for this one...

I like and appreciate this contest but I feel like if we should have better things to do than to play around with our use of the underscore...

Technically... yes.

The reason for the strict filename rules:
  • Users are asked to not have any white spaces in the filename, as this can result in errors on servers.
  • I am using scripts to streamline the creation of the Statistic Sheets (to drastically reduce the work-time on these sheets). These scripts are tuned per game to trim certain exported data. It is extra work to "adjust" offsets, or figure out which entry belongs to whom.

Code: Select all

Example:
used_filename_but_misses underscore.wav

could result in:
used_filename_but_misses%20underscore.wav

Depending on the used file server, this can also result in an error while trying to delete files.

I am checking these... multiple times after each game round has ended.
In fact, this is the most time consuming thing each Mix(ing) Challenge prior to / while creating the Statistic Sheets.

You got "tagged disqualified" after Mix Round 1, because you didn't copy/paste/edit the filename template.

You got a warning after Mix Round 2. You did indeed copy/paste/edit the filename template, but your username still uses white spaces. This is not a disqualification. Your mix was still in the game. However, the client didn't select your mix after Round 2 for the podium.

Code: Select all

Here are the used filenames:

Mix Round 1: MC099_LosTimpanis_Falling_Cadence Soundlabs.wav
Mix Round 2: MC099__LosTimpanis__Falling__Cadence Soundlabs_R2.wav

Notice the white spaces of your username

The filename should ideally be:
MC099__LosTimpanis__Falling__Cadence_Soundlabs_R2.wav
or
MC099__LosTimpanis__Falling__CadenceSoundlabs_R2.wav
Everyone that has white spaces in their name, either uses no spaces in between the name, or underscores. It is also general good practice to do this in "the real world" (as in: collaborative work outside of the Mix Challenge community).

The rules have been crystal clear on this. By joining the game, you agreed to adhere to the given and well established Rules and Guidelines.

There is nothing to argue here. Please pay more attention to detail with the next Mix(ing) Challenge.
