Hello!

I could have missed this one but the MC mailing saved me. :tu:
So mastering challenge not only occurs on even months! :educate:

Like everyone here I appreciate your great work OctopusOnFire. Very nice recorded and balanced. The band is great as well, very cool to master that music, whatever the duration!

My process:

As always, I tried to affect the more with the less processes as possible.
What I found worked best whas compressing sides with a TNT compressor emulation with fast attack slow release, deesser mode, then cutting lows and boosting freqs around 300 and 5K.
Then I compressed mid with a 660 compressor emulation with slow attack and fast release, then boosted freqs around 70, 800 and 7K.
Last in my 2bus, just a digital limiter to catch true peaks and reach the -14 program RMS target.

Good luck everybody, good luck for judging OctopusOnFire, and see you soon!

I liked the song and the mast challenge initiative as well.

Full ITB:

2 eq's in series, a plugiteq qp1a and a fabfilter q2. I used them totally to taste.
a cubase compressors with 2 ratio and short attack and release
a pro l limiter just to dither and to meet the loudness targets.

Really like the song too. Great fun experimenting with it.

mp3 https://drive.google.com/open?id=1NqG6P ... SLwOdOFUei
wav https://drive.google.com/open?id=1LuBXi ... IKYJmmpbki

Signal chain and thoughts..
Found original slightly brutally bassmonoed. So first eq was to boost some mid lows to the side channel. Also put a kind lowpass filter also on the side. Just a tad. More in the first eq, a minor dip in tn the mid lows center. Next, multiband compressor focusing on the very lows and the very highs. But also on two mid areas. Next up FG-X Comp. Slow and easy. Next I had four limiters set up for comparison. Tested was Slate Digital FG-X Level, FabFilter Pro-L2, Waves L3-16 and Brainworx bx_xl2. Can you guess wich one you hear? I also had a second limiter Pro-l2 just to catch those "true peaks". No additional harmonics saturation plugs used.

Other "edits" were some manual leveling between parts, softening of the very first transient, fixed bass glitch at 1:24(ish), and slight lengthening/softening of the end (littleplate)

Comparing my master to the others makes me feel like mine is mid focused and wide but not so much when listening to it with other songs. I don´t know. The song is great, love it. You got a follower.

It is the 15th February 2018, 1:05pm GMT+1/CET - Mastering Challenge 002 has officially ended

If I didn't miscount, we have 11 participants this month, 2 participants less than last challenge.
There has been been 0 submission after the deadline. I've given 0 warning to adhere to the rules.

I now open the field for everyone to give each other feedback (if you feel like doing so). This will be independent to the client feedback however.

Please watch this spot for the client feedback and the Winners Podium announcement.

Good luck to all participants.

Thanks everyone for participating, and for the kind words about the song! It was my first full production for another band (even if I ended up programming all the synths myself).

I'll get all your files tomorrow, and will listen & prepare the feedback through the weekend/next week. Good luck to everyone!

how do you measure the LUFS?

If I play the song from start to finish it gives me a final value of i.e. -15 but if I reset the meter on the loudest parts it says i.e. -13.

Which value/method do have I to take into account?

Thanks.

They're talking about "integrated" LUFS, which is from start to finish.
