Civil war Song

https://www.dropbox.com/s/xr0gba5qxvn93 ... 2.wav?dl=0 (Wave)

https://www.dropbox.com/s/2whj3wpiho2jt ... 2.mp3?dl=0 (Mp3)

There are a few timing issues on the kick, reso guitar and strings and a little bit on the vocal so I did a some clean up to make them align better with the beat of the song.

The vocal also has some pitch issue and I did use mild pitch correction at less than 50% strength so it will still allow the natural pitch to come through without sounding like a perfect auto tune that we”dislike” (or I hate)
The reso gitar has some mild pitch correction as well. If I didn’t do this it would be very noticeable since they are presented more forward on both sides of the panoramic-unlike the original mix which are more blended in in the mix.

There is no bass track so to add the missing element I added a little sub bass from the kick with a plugin - Mbassador
plus some more eq to taste.

I push the drum roll in the back of the mix along with a big reverb and plus backing vocal to create a cinematic war feel and I love the result as it gives a deeper layer in the song.

The main vocal has a lot of things going on such as: short delay, doubler, some reverb and a little parallel comp but they still sound pretty natural to my ears and sits firmly against the rest of the instruments.

I ran some automation volume on acc guitar, strings, elec guitar and backing vocal and they are a lot of dynamic eq side chaining to prevent freq masking and for a clearer separations.

At the end I apply a mild dynamic eq, compression, tape and clipper to control the peak level.

Mixed in Studio One
Plugins: EQ, Compressors, Reverb, Delay,Pitch correction,Sub bass from Melda, Eventide H3000 for guitar and vocals, Hornet Tape, True Clip.

Enjoy

Gain staged some tracks up, some down.
NLS on the whole shebang.
NY compression on all busses
Verbsuite verb
Abbey road plate, and Repeater delay on VOX
VOX has - Blackbox, CLA-2A, TG-12345 EQ, and a doubler for thickening
TG12345 on all busses,

then busses sent to my Tascam-m24, eq on all, and parallel processing using channel strips on drums and guits,

then through Joe Meek dAd stereo compressor for touch of glue, width and color.

a few automations in the daw for vox ducking and to bring out the guits in places.

Thank you for listening and this was a cool track and fun mix.

F6 RTA as main EQ, EQ-ED mostly drums and guitars.

I've been focused on panning and alligning microphone mid-side focusing for having room space and at the same time enjoying with the main vocal on a intimate ambient.

Fruity parametric EQ2 for making more clear the frequencies.

And added some reverb to drums, guitars, and voice (Vocals with low ammount of decay 0.3ms)

I recently got Eventide's UltraChannel on a sale, and virtually everything uses it, including the master bus. More details TK. My initial mixes were drenched in reverb, so I tried to pull back a bit.

Hi everyone!

Beautifully recorded tracks, a pleasure to work with. I dealt with the MS tracks the old-fashioned way (double the side track, flip the phase) and used a lot of buses. The rest of the song was mixed in pretty much the usual way. The strings had to take care of the low end in the absence of a bass guitar, which is not ideal but I guess the war theme kind of justifies a little roughness. For the same reason I didn't tune the vocals (which I'm usually inclined to do), you don't really expect a soldier to be a pitch-perfect singer. So, keeping in mind the theme of the song and the given guidelines I tried to tuck away my delays and reverbs, except in the end where I attempted to make the tom hit sound like a gunshot. I think it suits the song well.
As usual, my master bus has a little compression and tape emulation, and a limiter which works as a safety volume knob.

Thanks for the interesting track, and good luck!

Here is my submission. I used a couple reverbs on parallel aux bus. Delay echo on tracks that I thought could use a slightly bigger sound. Subtle compression in stages where needed, and EQ to bring out tonality where needed. Subtle saturation on a few tracks, heavier saturation on a couple guitars and the intro bows, no saturation on e bow 2, but auto pan on that one to keep it moving (I think it sounds less like a fake digital instrument that way). Nothing out of the box this time. SSL plug on the 2 with kramer tape plug for some vintage vibe. I wanted to keep this one fairly natural sounding with a focus on punch and presence. Hope you like it. Feedback is appreciated as always.

Dear David Paul Paige/The Average Citizens and the Mix Challenge Community,

Here is my submission for your consideration:
WAV: https://www.dropbox.com/s/f0wo28pld3t2k ... d.wav?dl=0
MP3 (for reference): https://www.dropbox.com/s/dwff88z3h3yhl ... d.mp3?dl=0

Mixing notes (N.B. This was mixed ITB with Logic Pro X. All M/S tracks were processed with the stock Directional Mixer.):

Drums: High/low pass EQ on the individual tracks. Kick, snare, and tom got an extra dip around 400Hz. I was getting some weird ringing on the 'room Side" track, so there's a notch at 200Hz to kill it. Drum buss got a vintage-style EQ to boost the highs, and was hit with reverb via an aux track.

Shaker: There's a transient shaper to control the attacks and give some sustain, followed by a vintage-style limiter to bring up the level without sacrificing dynamics, and finally an imager to spread it out a bit. It was also sent to the same reverb aux track as the drums.

Guitars (acoustic & reso): High/low pass EQ on the individual tracks. "reso Gtr" is panned 90 degrees left, and "reso Gtr B" is panned 90 degrees right. Then the acoustic was sent to a buss, the resos were sent to another buss, both busses hit with a bit of compression and reverb.

Guitar (electric): High/low pass EQ, distortion pedal for a touch of fuzz, followed by compression and reverb, and panned to about 3 o'clock.

Ebow (1, 2, &3): High/low pass EQ. 1 is panned hard left, 2 is panned center, and 3 is panned hard right. The three were sent to a buss and hit with Brauer Motion (Waves) to give some movement. The buss track is panned a few ticks to the left.

Strings: High/low pass EQ. "Low" was panned center, and "Hi" was panned a few ticks to the right. The two tracks were sent to a buss and hit with reverb via an aux track.

Vocals (lead): High/low pass EQ, three compressors in series, and then reverb. Per the request of the song provider, tuning was minimal. I mostly just tried to "fix" the drifting at the end of phrases.

Vocals (bu A & B)): High/low pass. "bu Vox A" is panned 90 degrees left, and "bu Vox B" is panned 90 degrees right. Both were sent to a buss with serial compression and reverb.

Vocals (bu C & D): High/low pass, compressor, flanger, and reverb.

Each buss was then printed, individually EQ'd, and hit with tape saturation. The mix buss has an instance of Abbey Road Vinyl (Waves) just to give the whole thing some drive (no noise, crackle, clicks, wow, or flutter were engaged), followed by a high shelf EQ boost (2dB at 10kHz), and a single-band compressor to hold it all together.

Thanks in advance for listening, and for your consideration.

Best regards,
Jeff (jeffssoloband)

Thanks for the tracks. They are awesome.

- Beside the usual EQ for separation and compressor on every track, the most notable in this mix is the usage of the "kick far" track. I only use it in the chorus; I think it provides a change (shift) in mood that makes the song more interesting (only my opinion).

-I use the "Lo-pad" to take up the bass's job.

-Treated the M/S tracks but only use the "side" of 1 of the guitars (acoustic gtr playing single notes)

-Numerous fancy automation moves (forgot exactly what I did, sorry)

-2 Delays (short and long) panned opposite + stereo reverb on vocal track

Thanks for the music! I enjoy mixing it.

Thank you David for providing the song.

I processed the M/S tracks without plugins by using the 'duplicate the side and flip polarity' method.
