Thank you so much for providing the tracks for this challenge
@BenjiRage. Personally I love synth wave, in particular FM-84 and The Midnight, so I had a lot of fun mixing the track. Obviously I went for that lush, spacious 80's sound with a lot of depth, but still with a modern touch. All in all it suited my analog-style way of mixing, which is of course how that 80's music was mixed anyway

Hope you like it!

Mixed using Genelec 8030 & Sennheiser HD650. Post-mix reference listening on Hi-Fi system, car stereo and of course iPhone speakers.
General plugins used
N-Console (Neve console bus emulation) on all busses
API Vision Channel (API channel strip)
Send effects
AKG BX 20 - For adding depth and ambience
TSAR-1 - For that lush, sparkling reverb with a long tail
Spaced Out - Delay for adding texture and depth
Parallel compression
Two busses (Drums crush & Band crush), both using the SSL G-bus compressor blended back into the mix.
Drums
Mostly some EQ as these kind of drum sounds are compressed out of the box, and compressing the more only alters the sound of them.
Synth basses
Some EQ, and Waves RBass on the main bass track. Pulteq EQP-1A on the bass buss
Vocals
Used 1176 + LA-2A for compression. Sent the main lead vocal track to a buss for distortion, blended to taste.
Guitars
Mostly EQ and compression on the chord guitar to smooth it out and give it more sustain.
Synths
Again, synths sound good by nature, so it's mostly about adding some EQ to remove low-mids that tend to stack up and add some high-mid definition to the parts you want to cut through more. I wanted more sustain to the bridge piano, so I sent it to a bus which I literally crushed with an 1176 and blended in below the piano track.
Mixbus
API 2500 - Light mixbus blue. Used for coloration more than compression
Chandler Curve Bender - Some light EQ-ing on the mixbus
Manley Vari MU - Again, barely compressing, added for coloration and smoothness
Automation
I usually end up with a lot of automation to get the track moving between the different sections. I used the delay track for the main pluck to add body to the center of the sound, pulled it back during the verses to let them breathe, and the increased the volume during the choruses. Some panning automation on some tracks, volume automation on the backing vocals and vocal distortion between the sections. Narrowed the panning of the main pads during the breakdown before going into the final chorus where I went stereo with them again.
Old-school mixer that started out in -95 on tape-machines and analog desks. Today mostly in-the-box. Big UAD fanboy
