Hi,
Here's my entry. I'm quite illiterate on the genre, so I paid attention to the rough and try to make everything bigger. I added some creative stuff, also following the structure of the rough. I went for a very punchy and bass heavy kind of mix, and in doubt I pushed a little harder.
I actually took the opportunity to try out stuff and new plugins, quite liked the result and ended up enjoying it more than I expected. Thanks Adam for the tracks!
I used a lot of XLN audio's RC-20 since it gives a lot of different possibilities (6 modules: Noise, wobble, distortion, bit crushing, reverb and magnetic tape) and it's really good for transitions. The one at the intro and halfway in the song are done with it. On top of that, every module has a control that basically randomizes its parameters, which I used subtly on the bass.
At 3:35 there's another transition made by automating a send from the drums to a parallel track with a filter sweep and RC-20 randomly bitcrushing it.
Kick: MB Compression, clipping and Pultec Eq. Tried to make it as punchy and heavy as possible.
Bass: Elysia nvelope (some sort of a frequency-dependent transient designer) to remove some attack around 500Hz and add a little sustain on the 200Hz range. RC-20 adding distortion, randomized bitcrushing and a little space. Eq, compression and tape emulation. There's an automated send to a secondary track that uses crystalizer, little alterboy and echoboy and comes up every 4 or 8 bars, depending of the section of the song.
Key mid Pad: It goes to an aux that has Primal Tap and BackMask (an obscure reverse plugin) to create movement.
Mid Synth: Elysia nvelope again to accentuate the attack of the synth. Crystalizer to add a minor third (almost imperceptible, 3% wet) and combined with Primal Tap to create depth. IK Multimedia classic compressor to accentuate the attack even more and add width.
Voices: I tried to create a weird ambience for them. Tried to give it movement and a little randomness, so I used Primal tap, crystalizer and again BackMask in very little doses.
There's plenty of stuff on the mix bus, but none of it is working very hard: Eq, Bus comp, MB comp and 2 plugins to give some overall color and character: Virtual Tape Machines and Abbey Road Vinyl. Also an stereo image to Narrow the lower frequencies to mono.
