Mix Challenge

Hi,
I've this in Logic using UAD plugins. I mostly tried to get all the tracks to be heard and I wanted to create a tight feeling with drums and bass. For sure it was difficult with so many tracks. I kinda like it though, tell me your thoughts..

As the band comes from Liverpool, it created some pressure on me to find a mix idea that would enhance this melodic song. I listened couple of times the demo mix, and I decided to create big space where vocals could shine in the middle. Something inspired by Supremes.

My mix idea is based on delays.

DRUMS AND BASS AND VOCALS
I started by adding mono delays to kick and snare.
After that I added stereo ping-pong delays to bass.
When I was happy with interplay of drums and bass, I brought in the beautiful vox, which was to be the main thing in my mix. Also the vox sound was based on delays.

Drums: little eq on every track, parallel compression to kick and snare, and gated saturation to kick and snare. And lots of delays.

Bass: basic eq and compression + lots of delays.

Vox: eq, compression, parallel compression, delays.

OTHER INSTRUMENTS
So, first I mixed the whole song with just drums, bass and vocals. When I was happy with their balance, I started to bring in other instruments. I liked the guitars, so they were to have a big role in my mix. But I felt that keyboards were not adding so much to the song, their role was be smaller in my mix.

Guitars: some eq on guitars bus.
Keyboards: some eq on keyboards bus.

Youlean loudness meter gave me these numbers:
- Momentary Max = -11.19 LUFS
- Short Term Max = -12.75 LUFS
- Integrated = -16.01 LUFS

Plenty of Automation and basic compression and eqing with some interesting delays and reverbs. Some creative plugins but the idea is to retain the basic character of the song and not produce it too much and make the original performance shine.

I only discovered this forum yesterday and had very little time to do a descent mix, However, I liked the challenge so I gave it a try anyway (knowing the result would be far from perfect)

First of, I mix 99% OTB, I mainly use my DAW as a glorified HDD bases multitrack player, I only use plugins if no hardware alternative is available (to me)

DAW of choice: Studio One 4
mixed on a Soundtracs CM4400 32ch
some submixing in Studio One (to fit everything in less then 32ch)
when EQ was necessary during the submixing, this was done using Console 1 (with the stock cchannel strip)
desk EQ was used on most channels.
Kick in & out were EQ'd on the deskchannels and the bussed together and put trough a Lindell 500 style Pultec and a SPL transient designer
Snare top & bottom were also EQ'd on the desk and then bussed together On the buss, I put a dbx 560 compressor The buss was also fed to a Yamaha SPX990 for some plate reverb on the snare
Toms were a real challenge (and one of the things I'm not happy with how they turned out). "original" toms were EQ'd in S1 and sent to a stereo bus in S1, Dubbed toms were also EQ'd in S1 an sent to the same S1 bus as the "original toms This bus then was sent to the Sountdracs in to a set of channels. Some extra EQ'ing was done on the desk and these channels were sent to a Aphex aural exciter and a SPL transient designer (with the aural exciter doing all the work and the transient designer almost zeroed out). I ccould get some great toms sounds with this setup, however none that fit into the song...
Bass no EQ (I think) and trough a dbx 560
Keys almost zero EQ, just some autoation in S1
Guitars, some EQ on the des, some automation in S1
Lead vocal, ccompression using the KT-76, some EQ on the desk (slight cut in the lows, light boost in the highs, both using the shelving EQ). Some reverb from a TCC M3000 and delay using the TC D-Two.
Low and crushed vocal, didn't feel that one, so it is in there, just super low, so you can feel it is there, but not really hear it
Backing vocals, grouped in S1, fed in the desk as a stereo pair, cut the lows, some reverb (M3000) and done.
Some very light compression with the Foccusrite MultiMaster on the main bus finishes this off.

first of all, thank you for the tracks. It is well recorded and was fun to mix.
I had a lot of work with automation and EQing to get the right balance. Over all this song was not that easy for me to mix. But its a very good song.

Here ist a short overview about my mix.
It is always difficult to explain a mix briefly, because you could write a novel about every single mix.

Lead Vocals
- Vocal-Rider (Range 3db)
- API 2500 Compressor, Ratio 4:1
- Eq, HPF (90 Hz) and Dynamic EQ (1,1kHz)
The signal was sent to several busses
- exciter
- stereo-delay (more stereo width)
- reverb (predelay 56ms, time 1 sec)

Soft LV
- EQ, HPF (290Hz), little compression
- reverb (no predelay, time 1,5 sec)
- Soft LV used for more stereo width on several parts of the song

Crunch LV
- used on several parts of the song for smooth the lead vocals
- used on the „crunch-part“ as an effect

Drums
- gates on „Kick in“ (sidechain „Kick out“) und „Snare Bot“ (sidechain „Snare Top“)
- EQs and HPF on every Channel
- overdubed Toms just an stereo effect, not a part of the drum kit
- stereo compression of the entire drum kit by Puigchild 670
- For the snare sound I use several effects on different busses
- sample or stereo-slap-daley for more width
- gated reverse reverb (40 ms) to strech the snare
- reverb

Bass
- Eq and Sidechain-Compressor controlled by „Kick out“ (63Hz)

Guitars
Scheps 73 Preamp, boost at 1,6kHz (more presence)

Keys/Synths
- EQs and HPF on every Channel
- For more Stereo width I use „A1 Stereo Control“ by Alex Hilton

I am an amateur sound engineering student, i try to clear some of the frequencies and add colour to the sound while creating a wide sound. All drum and keyboard has their unique eq. I will appreciete any comments to make me understand things that i do wrong or well. Good luck to all
