Hi dego,
thanks for the tracks, I wonder if you intentionally moved the acoustic guitars after the break? (by an eighth note I believe). I think you did so to create a different feel for the last part. Thats totally ok of course and the groove is still on the grid but personally it throws me off a bit cause it´s a little obvious (you can feel the "1" in the pattern is intended to be somewhere else. For lack of a better explanation).
Just been tempted to move them back but I guess that´s not an option is it?
Anyway, will be fun to mix that!
I had to check this in the original project file and it is indeed off. I should have picked up on this and I will correct it so I am happy for you you to put it back.

Here's mine

Edit (adding more info per the rules)

I went with a somewhat bright and airy mix as it seemed to compliment the acoustic guitar. The guitars, cello, violin and male vocals were all fattened up a bit with a delayed modulation. I didn't have such an effect on hand, so I took the free Blue Cat flanger, turned the dry signal all the way down, delayed it around 30 ms, and mixed it back into the original signal. The kick is gated at about 275 ms to tighten it up, and the snare is basically the original sound mixed with a highly saturated copy with a boost around 1.8k and a good cut at 250. There is a delay on the snare set at 322 ms, which you can't really hear, but it got rid of an uncomfortable emptiness I was feeling after each hit. The guitars all got some parallel compression mixed with the uncompressed track. This kept the brightness and delicate feeling I was going for. The bass was constructed from a super compressed low-passed copy of the track mixed with a fairly compressed copy with a band-pass filter centered at 1k to give it a nice woody sound. The compressors were set with a slow attack (20 ms) on both the low and high parts of the bass to give it a real aggressive attack. Of course I added subtle automation throughout to create movement in places where the song was feeling lifeless.

Here is mine. I didn't use any creative effects and wanted to stay close to the original.

My mix:

Wave: https://drive.google.com/file/d/127wHbx ... sp=sharing

As others have done, I used LOTS of automation to add motion to the entire song but mainly the violin a cello parts. Screenshot of some of the volume automation attached.

Applied 2 reverbs, one short for space, one long for depth. Used parametric EQ dips to reduce resonances in guitars, violins and cellos. Added considerable "air" to snare and vocal tracks and extreme mid boost to "plucking guitar" for percussive effect.

No FX on stereo buss.

Usual suspects: eq's, compressions, automations, delays and reverbs. Feel free to ask.

More great submissions. It's going to be tough to pick a winner.

Hi,

this is only a static mix, but I have to leave town for work tommorow and can't finish it on the road because I used a lot of Waves which won't work on my laptop from work (wish they'd still use iLok). :bang: With that said, I hope you like what I did so far and I get the chance to add my automation in round 2!
I tried to stay close-ish to the original and just supercharge it. My main issues have been the peaky, brittle guitars, the missing centre and crowded sides, so I had to change some positioning compared to the original.
Someone said "Conan" and that's what I had in mind the whole time. It's treated like a soundtrack: It's big, pretty dynamic and it has some Disney Hall in it

Hello,

I am new to the forum and saw this challenge in the final days and thought I would take a run at it. This is my first entry in Mix Challenge. Thank you, dego, for the song. I enjoyed mixing it! I spent approximately 3-4 hours over the last two days to complete. There was not enough time to automate, but i did record some live mix fades.

I used echo modulation in Echoboy to add a little extra effect and swirl on the intro chimes.

To create depth, I used aux effects busses set up for room, plate, large hall, and repeating delays used at different points. My goal was to use this depth to add realism and make the virtual instrumants feeling as genuine as possible.

I found the acoustic bass eq a challenge to reign in and the octave jumps awkward to deal with. Unfortunately, the deadline came before I had time to properly crosscheck the mix, and, as you can see from my edit note below, I feel my hunch was right on my bass challenge and that was a point I would hope to improve in the next round. .

Edit: "With only a short time to quickly mix before the deadline, I just got to listen to the mix on alternate small speakers after submitting with no time to fix, and I hear issues in the low mids/bass translation that I would improve if given the chance.''

Overall, I was happy with other sections, though, so hopefully this balances out to a positive.
Hope you like the bones enough, though, to want to hear more.....

Cheers!

Kevin
