Mix notes:
I tried to keep this as raw and gritty sounding as possible. All provided tracks were used. No samples were used. All tracks were high- and/or low-passed as to remove any unnecessary rumble and hiss. The Mix was done in Logic Pro X
Kick tracks were EQ'd and compressed. Snare tracks were EQ'd and a transient shaper was used to bring out the attack on the top mic, and a little smudge on the bottom mic. Hi-Hat was EQ'd to tame the harshness and panned slightly to the left. Toms were EQ'd and compressed. High Tom is panned off to the left a bit, Low Tom is off to the right a bit, and the floor tom is hard right. Overheads were EQ's to tame the harshness. I was also experiencing some phase issues, so I used Ozone 8 Imager, split it in 3, and brought anything over 10.6kHz to mono, and from there down to 980Hz was pulled to about 75% mono. (not sure if this was the best way to tackle the phase issue, but it worked
) The Room & Bleed tracks were EQ'd, compressed, and blended in to the rest of the drum mix. The Drum Buss was treated with EQ and parallel compression (TDR's SlickEQ and Kotelnikov, respectively). And finally a touch of plate reverb.
Bass was EQ'd and fairly heavily compressed (I was getting about 3dB of gain reduction on the transients.) I then added an instance of iZotope Trash 2 for some saturation.
Guitar 1: Both tracks were panned hard left. The DI track was EQ'd, compressed, run through REDD37-51, and blended into the amped track.
Guitar 2: The amped track was panned hard right. The DI track was panned hard left, EQ'd, compressed, and bussed to an aux track with J37 for that tape delay you're hearing.
Guitar 3: Both tracks are panned center. The amped track was heavily compressed and driven on the output. The DI track was EQ'd, compressed, run through an instance of REDD-37-51, and blended into the amped track.
The track was run through REDD37-51. Then it hit Soundtoys Effect Rack loaded with Devil-Loc, Decapitator, EchoBoy, and Radiator. And finally a touch of room reverb. The whole thing was then bussed to an aux track with J37 for saturation.
The track was first loaded into RX 6 for some repairs. Adaptive phase rotation, de-clip, de-plosive, de-click were used and spectral repair was used to clean up the in-between areas. Then it was loaded back into Logic, where it got two instances of compression in series, followed by Decapitator for some grit. Finally a touch of room reverb was added.
Ad Voc 1 was panned hard left, Ad Voc 2 was panned hard right and Hi pitch Chorus was center. The Hi pitch Chorus track was run through The Kings Microphone for a bit of color. All three were then run through a compressor, followed by Soundtoys Effect Rack loaded with EchoBoy, Decapitator, and MicroShift. And finally a plate reverb.
Based on the lyrics, I wanted to get a little chaotic here. The track was first run through TNT Voice Executor for that radio-like quality. Then I ran it through PanMan for the random triggered panning.
Each of these seven components were then bounced down to individual stereo tracks. Each track was loaded with an instance of Neutron 2 to detect and fix any frequency masking, as well as an instance of NLS Channel for color. The stereo out channel was loaded with NLS Buss followed by Ozone 8 for some overall EQ and a touch of compression (single-band) to "glue" the mix together.
Feel free to hit me up with any questions/ comments/ concerns. Thank you for your consideration.
Best regards,
Jeff
