Hi,

This is my mix. Excellent song and production. Mixed ITB in Protools. Used native plugins and plugins from Flux, izotope, Melda Productions, and Acustica. I blended the di instruments in more than the rough mix (especially 22-23 Guitar Chorus Licks), and also focused on finding the sweet spot for the vocals. During the chorus, I brought the reverbs out added a parallel drum compressor to make the chorus even more impressive. Thanks, looking forward to your feedback. :tu:

Hi Cezar and Mr. Fox, first of all thank you for these always fun and instructive initiatives, below I upload my mix. An excellent song that everything was except easy to mix; certainly a difficult deessing job but also trying to focus the mid range of the song was not easy at all. I mixed everything on ProTools with Slate digital, Fab Filter, Waves and Izotope plugins (Dynamic Eq to sit still the treble of the voice in particular). On the master bus I used Fabfilter's C2 during the mix to slightly compress (from 1 to 2 db max) which is a procedure I almost always do. Thanks to Mr. Fox, Cezar and all the competitors, good listening and good luck to all.

Hi everyone!
Really nice song. I loved the production and recording.
Regarding my mix attempt, I did it entirely in the box using Ableton Live 10´s plugins and a few 3rd party plugins.
I first balanced and panned the tracks and reduced their level to have some headroom.
Then I aligned the drums, added some eq and compression to the set and reverb to the snare and toms.
I didn´t use any drum enhancement or sample. Not even used a gate or transient designer. Just plain eq, compression and saturation. I cleaned up the toms´ bleed manually.
I then mixed the bass. Added eq, compression and parallel saturation to taste.
The guitars mixed themselves. I loved the sound. I used the ones with the fx on. Same process: eq, little compression on groups and some shine on the acoustics.
I think I added a flanger to one of the electrics near the end of the song.
The vocals received eq, serial compression, a couple of deessers, some reverb and delay. I used short reverbs and short delays.
I finally, did some volume automation and added a tape simulation plugin to the master bus.
Thanks for the opportunity!
All the best,
Giancarlo

Lovely song, well produced and recorded. Thanks for the music.

OH: Just an EQ, comp to keep it steady. Ducks when snare comes in
Kick: paralleled, wanted to get the beater, distortion
Snare: Hard compression plus parallels to create thickness and snap; I wanted the tightness (and the aggressiveness, perhaps) of the snare when it comes to louder parts. Hi pass @100Hz, reverb
Bass: EQ, compression, paralleled, distortion. Ducks when kick comes in.
Guitar: HP and enough compression to keep the strumming guitar steady. Looking for warmer sound so added a distortion
Distorted Guitars: Send to same buss. Shave off the lo end up to 80Hz. Paralleled. Added delay and reverb
Vocal: EQ, compressed, Paralleled, added long delay, reverb, distortion
Synth: Hi passed up to 300Hz, boost a bit at 3k, delay, reverb. Ducks when vox comes in.
Backing Vocal: EQ, compression, paralleled, reverb, delay

I wanted a smooth introduction for the vocal, and when the drums start to come in I wanted the transition to signal that there will be a climax somewhere soon. After the initial teaser mini-climax, when the song turns back to "easier" times, I wanted it a bit louder so that the shift is not as dramatic in levels, at the same time handing out a bit of ear candy (long repeat delay+reverb) but only briefly. In the "real" climax I relied on the snare, the distorted guitars, and the synth to drive home with them being more prominent . I hope it translates well and that you like it.

Greetings to Mr. Fox, CeZar and all Mix Challenge participants!

. . . . I'd like to thank Mix Challenge and especially Cezar Stefan Habeanu for allowing me/us the opportunity to Mix this quite wonderful Song.
I found Mix Challenge online and downloaded the Tracks March 13. That's right... Friday the 13th. Turned out to be my lucky day!
I spent about two hours loading up the Tracks and getting to know the song the same day, and spent four and a half hours Mixing the next day.

This Mix fell together so nicely. Everything was recorded wonderfully. The Main Acoustic Guitar blend was perfect, and the Electric Guitar
tracks sounded great, so I didn't bother using the Clean or D.I. Tracks. I only found one "Easter Egg". The Click Track at the end of the Main Acoustic. Oddly, I didn't hear that on the individual Tracks of the Main Acoustic Guitar...

I found it very handy to have the existing Mix to use as a guide. Initially when I loaded the tracks, I "heard" a gentler Kick. So hearing CeZar's mix gave me a bit of Artistic intent direction. I did what I usually do for D.I. Bass, and was pleasantly surprised to find I didn't need to tweak it much.
I ran the Electrics through a cabinet simulator. That took a bit of the "edge" off the overdrive and put them all "together in the room".

This mix has more of the Synths and Backing Vocals. The Backing Vocals all sounded really good, especially all together. No Autotuning anywhere... All the vocals sound in tune and really didn't need it. Also, my feeling generally is, that pure should stay pure.
A little EQ, a little Compression, a touch of Reverb here and there, and some widening to help give it a 'live" performance feeling.
Then just a few Automated Delay throws on the Electric Guitar Buss to give it an ethereal feeling. Pretty subtle, so listen closely.
Done. I'm feeling it!

Mixed with Fruity Studio 9, using Bose QC25 Headphones only. So it may be a bit wonky on good Studio Monitors. It sounded pretty good in the car. But I'd reduce some reverb, and boost the Kick and Toms a bit. Unfortunately as a latecomer, I wouldn't get a chance to do that until it's past the deadline, so it is what it is.
If you listen to this mix on headphones using Sonarworks Reference 4 and Meier Crossfeed set to 20, you'll hear exactly what I heard.
Not having Studio Monitors bites. I hope you get a chance to hear it in some cans.

CeZar... If you like what I did and ever need any Mixing done, please feel free to contact me. cgarthwaite@sc.rr.com I'm loving what you've done!
Anyone else should also feel free to contact me for Mixing as well.

What would I have added had the challenge allowed it...? A very short pause at 2:16, then a quick reverse cymbal as a "riser".

Hello mixers,

This month challenge was less complicated in comparison with past months. Excellent recordings. Drums in phase, vocals in tune, different guitar mics.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/tpbvwaxeoav13 ... e.wav?dl=0

Firstly, I started with drums. I put a high pass on the overheads and add the kick with a little bit of distortion and eq, later added the snare with little reverb.

Next, I compressed the bass with little of eq and raised it to a reasonable level and put it in mono.

For the guitars I created a bus with the rhythm acoustic guitars and added compression, eq, delay, chorus, reverb and paned them wide to the sides, almost like a haas effect. The main acoustic guitar has compression, eq, reverb, delay and little distortion. And for the electric guitars I made a bus with compression, eq, distortion, and reverb. Finally, I added a re amped guitar on top of the solos, to give guitars more energy.

Vocals in this genre are a bit hard for me, I couldn't find a nice volume to put them, so I compressed them and add a little tape distortion. Put an echo dark delay and a de-esser. Not much of eq. Backing vocals are panned to the sides with automation on the panning. They have compression, reverb, chorus and phaser.

The synths don't have much, only high pass and little reverb. They are panned to the sides as well.

Hope you like it, Thanks for the awsome song again!

Hey,

i really loved mixing this track, to me it feels like a retro pop rock balad
i use a lot of slate digital plugins in my mixes and i use the VTM in almost every track
i used parallel compression for drums, bass and Backing Vocals to give it a more power
duplicated the bass track, band passed it and distorted that signal using the FG-73 from VMR
used the crytalizer by soundtoys for the reverse reverb effect on the acoustic guitars
i have kept he retro feel on the song still intact, i guess
i dint reamp/use any of the DI guitars except guitar verse- i use TH-U Full Overload Plugin to Re amp it.
For Vocals i again used the VMR by Slate digital, reverb - Valhallah Plate, Repeater for tape slapback, Soundtoys Microshift for width, and valhalah Delay and Eiosis Desser.
