Guilty of real name vs username in the file name. :uhuhuh: :uhuhuh: Changed

This was a fun song. I tried to go with a dynamic mix. I thought the guitar parts fit nicely together. I eq'd them mostly and tried to find their place spatially. I liked the background vocals but I didn't push them to hard. For me the main vocal stayed center of attention. See if I hit the mark.

Stock Cubase9 plugins. Nothing fancy here.

Rule set for mix participants
  • We do recommend to not send in your mix within the first 24 hours of the Challenge. Take a day off, give your ears time to relax, take another listen the next day. Your entry is final - no re-submissions with changes allowed unless you're selected for Mix Round 2 (also see FAQ section Q1 and Q2)

This is a beautifully composed and performed song. I loved that the performer played the tracks, it gives this song a lot of soul.

That said, I made minor nudges to the bass.

I did a lot of editing on the background vocals. No pitch correction, I really liked them as is, just making sure phrases and syllables all started on time etc.

I went through and noted the plugins and their general settings. Hopefully this provides context to someone. At the very least it tells me I have too many damn plugins.

In addition to various automation, I used the following:

Mix Bus -
StudioOne console shaper
VUMTdeluxe VU
Boz Mongoose @ 200
Sie-Q subtle smile as a start, this may have been a step too crispy in hindsight.
Vertigo VSC very light bus compression
Slate VTM with the low end and input backed off

Instrument busses: StudioOne console shaper, very low drive

Bass -
Puigchild: medium compression, i like what it does with bass on non-sampled stuff, but my room is always lying to me about bass so…
FFProQ2: HP to 20, dipped 2-3db from about 100 - 400, LP from 5k.
Scheps 73: hitting the preamp pretty hard using input and drive knob, slight bump at 110

Acoustic -
Went with the crowd and panned left…
Slate FG-Stress: barely touching the peaks
Sonimus TuCo: leveling setting with some tweaks
VUMTdeluxe: dynamic eq at 230 wide bandpass high threshold
FF ProQ2: HP, dip around 500
Sends: Subtle Delay for width, and Room verb

Acoustic Lead -
FFProQ2: automated out breath noises at 6k
Puigchild: fairly light, quick-ish compression, just liked how it sounded
Boz Hoser XT: boost at 500, cut at 11k
Sends: Room, Plate

Electrics: waves API-550 to roll of highs and lows, fairly heavy RenComp
Sends: Room, Plate, Delay

Piano -
I wanted to give it some depth and grittiness, so:
Redd.51 bass cut, high boost, hitting the amp pretty hard
FFProQ2: HP at 100, dip in the low mids
J37: output boosted, slight wow and flutter
Sends: Room

Vocals:
Bus: TB Sibilance, TuCo slow attack and release, light compression
Lead Vocals: Eiosis de-esser, FG-Stress quick attack and release parallel, MJUC slow attack medium release Mk3, Hoser XT boost at 200, cut at 500, boost at 5k, boost at 10k
Sends: Room on the bus, delay for thickening, Plate
I separated the chorus vocals and added a subtle delay effect, and a bit more thickening.

BG Vocals:
Was it me or were these pretty saturated and low-mid heavy to start with? Like, “warm”, but really warm.
FFProQ2: low mids cut, hi boost, MJUC fast attack slow release MK3
Sends: Room, also L8R on the extra ooohs in the last chorus

Percussion: FFProQ2, RComp, L8R on the Shakers, Plate on Tambourine for effect

Sends:
Room: Valhalla Room, Studio Alpha preset with tweaks
Plate: Valhalla Plate, Smooth Steel Vocal with lots of tweaks
Widening Delay: EchoBoy Jr
Chorus Vocal Delay: Echoboy Binsonette with long-ish delay times

Hey less is better. Mixed using mixture of SSL and Neve 88 UAD plugins only. Reverb bricasti IR and delay waves h- delay. See ya

Like I said less is more. It is just a channel strip that I used in this mix. And took me 2 hours to mix it.

I forgot to use tape and if I'm allowed to upload I will be honoured to add some of tape goodies and Upload again.

So...I'm still so confused about giving feedback to people's mixes. Where does that forum exist?

Awesome song to do. Worked mostly with Renaissance EQ and compressors. Nothing fancy. Good luck everyone!

Please re-read the "Rules and Guidelines" - you still had 4 days, your submission is final.
Please wait for Round 2 to maybe get a chance to fix your mistakes.

Mix full ITB 3-4hrs to complete.

I only used 2 compressors in combination 1176 and la2a from t-racks
spring reverb on main acoustic guitars
room reverb and a delay for others element.

Nothing Fancy Bruhs!
