Hey. Thank you for the song provided.
Here is my mix.
Generally not a lot of processing, you can check everything Ive done on screenshots. For lazy ones short info:

Drums: Bit of verb, EQ, drum bus with soft distortion
Bass: Split to have clean and overdriven sounds, sidechained with kick
Guitars: reamped and used with originals, sidechained with kick
Vocals: same setups on CLA for verse and chorus main vocals, but added stereo delay for choruses. same setups for backs - a bit spreaded
Masterbus: Vitamins to tight a bit the bass, and to spread OHs, IK bus comp to glue

Hi Folks!

Here’s my Entry to the contest.
Thank you Morelia for sharing your work!
Thank you Mister Fox for providing this platform!

Here the corrected links. I hope these work now

Wav:

Mp3:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ie3qck28vwi3b ... r.mp3?dl=0

Screenshots:

The concept:

I tried to go for an Audioslave kind of sound, because I thought the drumsounds were very useable for that. That also means that I went for „dirty, distorted and in your face“ rather than „polished“. I used a lot of Saturation throughout the track (mostly Scheps Omni Channel)

I had a little bit of a hard time with the vocal concept. Not because they weren’t good (I thought the aggressive Lead was very cool!), but too many tracks for my taste. If I was in contact with the artist, I would’ve asked if I could just use the lead vocal and the two doubles in a Dave Grohl manner. The other voices took the impact away a little bit in my opinion and made it Sound more like a choir. But since they were there, and also were heard in the rough mix, I reconned that the artist wanted to have them in there, so I mixed them in, but a bit gentler than in the rough.

The technical side:

Once again I tried to recreate Andrew Scheps Rear-Buss technique based on his template, which hast he following routing:
Everything is routed to the Mix Buss (through respective Sub-Group-Busses).
Everything BUT the Drums ist routed to the Rear Buss copying exactly the Mix Buss Levels (FX and parallel Processing not included)

The Mix Buss is looks very crowded due to my FX routing in Studio One, I just wanted to find a way to set up a little bit of mid-side EQing without owning a MS-EQ, and that incorporated some Channel splitting and combining, which thankfully is easy in Studio One. But every plugin shows up in the slots as if they were in Serial, which is not the case.

In fact it's just a

- Dual-Mono Compressor, 2254 style, about 2-3db GR
-FC670 without compression just for transformer colour,
- a mid-side EQ to give a very light top end boost only to the sides,
-a very light Stereo Expansion,
-a Pultec Master Eq, with a gentle smiley- curve and
-a limiter which doesn’t do anything, just to keep the red lights off.

I do not consider this premastering, because it’s used in a very gentle way and just allows for less processing on the single Tracks.

On the Rear Buss it's Dual Mono 1176s for Parallel Compression (About 3-4 db GR)

The Guitars:

I used mainly the D.I. Tracks run through the Studio one Guitar Amp simulation, to have more control. But I mixed some oft he original signals in, for example in the guitar solo and chorus.
I decided to use only one guitar in the Verse to intensify energy in the chorus and make the song more dynamic.

The Bass:
I duplicated the bass track and had one run through a very distorted amp with a high pass on it, and the other was more for the sub-frequencies.
That way I got a very cool lower midrange from the bass to complement the guitars.

I hope you like it!

Cheers !
Flo

Hi :)

wav: https://app.box.com/s/5dvpqwbbkj5xakzbawbsyacjrx4khnnc
mp3: https://app.box.com/s/al2e2v7v64bwh5bq72ez484ntym34z37

Didn't push it that much, it's still fairly dynamic but it's a more of a hard rock sound, so by nature it'll be loud'n'compressed so I'm hitting -14 LUFS @ -2dBFS

pretty straight forward mix.. but a bit hard for me to find place for everything while featuring basically 'everything' at the same time. The trick here was to frequently check in mono as well as in sides-only and balance accordingly

I have a mono mixer channel with basically nothing on, and I send to that some instruments at different blends where the level dips too much while checking in mono.... doesn't work all the time, sometimes there's a need for M/S eq instead.

Was a bit of a cleaning job too: de-noised and cleaned the GTR, bass and vocal tracks.. especially the GTRs needed careful cleaning to push the GTR amp as needed.

Not sure what do say.. seems boring to tell you about eq, comp reverb/delays etc ... so if anyone is interested in something specific in my mix, please ask.

One thing with this mix: I re-discovered the importance of checking on headphones... it was really clear to me what was fogging up my mix. I checked and corrected on AKG K612 Pros and then wow... the next level of detail up on Sennheiser HD600.... monitoring is very important for me so I also ordered Beyerdynamic DT-1990 Pro, can't wait to check them out!! :hyper:

Hi everybody !

And thanks to Morelia and Mister Fox for offering us this title which is very interesting on several points:
first a great profusion of guitars, many tracks for the drums and therefore the possibility to each
to express through mixing his tastes in this rock song.

I would like to express clearly the anger held in my mix: give a very great energy to the title with a solid rhythm section.
The weak point are the voices. I decided to opt for a rather biting kind; so I eliminated everything that is deep voice
and some choruses off. So, once the rhythm was in place, I put the voice on the whole but not too much forward.

Concerning the technical part, here is a summary of the main actions:

- Mixed in Samplitude ProX3 and DM 4800 Tascam digital mixer which integrates an excellent limiter on the master output
to calm the whole horde.

- Big work on the drums with use of all the tracks in a mix which must bring the stamp of attack of the kick with that of
the snare drums and not forgetting the charley and the cymbal.

- The bass in DI : simply comp + equa

- All guitars (except the solo guitar) have been re-amplified. The real difficulty was to get a kind of "sound wall"
with a balanced timbre of guitars.

- Finally, a selection of the tracks of the voice that is passed in a real wringer to obtain a timbre related to the title.

In summary, I hope I have achieved what is easier to write than to do.

Feel free to contact me if you want more info.

It only remains to listen to this rocket ready to take off.

And good luck to all.

Cheers

Hey there!

My experience isn't as good as I want it should be, but I give it a try here on this great groovin song.

I used Engl 646 VS for the Guitars with an TSE 808 in front of it.

this time I used the CLA MixHub for several times to get control of the drums, Guitars and vocals. Its new for me but I think it sounds better than the previous mix I made.

more information in the pics of the doku.

here is my mix - hope you like it.

thanks to morelia for the track and the mix-challenge team to provide it to us!

Hi,

Thank you very much for the song and possibility to participate here.
This was really a powerful song with a lot of energy and therefore fun to mix.
Here is the result of my efforts:

WAV
MP3

I struggled a bit with all the voice takes, to find the right balance between using most of them for richness, but also not lose the main voice take.
I tried to work mostly with Neutron 2 for this mix, to see where I end up with it.

Drums: Neutron 2 on most of the tracks for EQ and some compression. Airwindows FanthomFive on the SSD Kick for added oomph. Paralell compression using SSL G Bus compressor

Bass: I used the Brainworks Rockrack Bass amp sim here, with some Neutron 2 processing

Guitars: Brainworks Rockrack amp sim here too and EQing with Neutron 2

Vox: Neutron 2 again for EQing and compression, TDR Limiter 6 for final limiting on the Vox buss

2 buss: Waves V-comp buss compressor, TDR SlickEQ, Airwindows ToTape5 and Channel6 for some colouring

Cheers!

Thank you for the song! I had alot of fun playing around with it.
Getting the vocals to a decent place was a challenge but that's exactly what I love about it. It's Mix Challenge after all!

Hey,

here is my take on it:

WAV: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1i--SB ... nrF7lUHF5j
MP3: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Dy21I ... fZAnHUg8Dq

As always I am out of time, but this one was pretty tough. I referenced against Audioslave, which is like a massive wall of sound. I think the timing issues are what stand in the way of being a really finished record. If I advance I may address at least some of those, especially the Bass to the Rythm Guitars, but to fix all the vocal stuff I would have to quit my job :)
Because everything is pretty raw and sounds like a home recording I tried to force some life into it by DevilLocking, punishing with Decapitator, and AllButtonsIning pretty much everything. Most often even a combination of those. But DAT OVERHEADS? They somehow sound like nothing with a HiHat :exhausted: Just like Audioslave :hihi:

Sorting through the vocals has also been an adventure, but I think they work well as an "Ensemble". At least I hope they do. It helped to spread them out a little to give them a more "produced" feel instead of being a narrow phasey wash in the center.

Thanks for the tune. It certainly has it's challenges and I have learned a lot so far.

Cheers
