Arelem - Glass Alloy
Overall a good production, although a bit loud.
Interesting, well-crafted bass, the percussive elements also sit well.
Between 2.00 and 2:36 - a good synth sound and an interesting melody. This is the part that reminds me of the style that is needed this month. However, the rest certainly do not give a "retro" nostalgic feeling.
By the way, the song holds its own in its genre, but it could be a little warmer, with more synthesizer parts and more melodies. Could be a little more retro.
APi_ZZ - Wynth Saved
A good start with the vocoder, the bass also starts interestingly.
The instruments also sound authentic as the song progresses.
On their own, these little pieces sound good, but it's a pity they don't come together as a whole song.
Small independent samples, lots of synths, some arps, different melodies and themes, but if I were to mix up the pieces randomly, it wouldn't even be noticeable. I would prefer if the song was built around a theme.
Otherwise it sounds good, clean, I have no particular problem with the mix. Nice work.
KukoBass - Bit by Bit
I like it, it's an imaginative song.
I really love the rhythm, the bass, the rhythmic percussive elements.
The lead starts very loud, moving in a different space from the other elements.
My biggest problem is the balance. The relationship of the instruments to each other is a bit chaotic in terms of volume.
But listening to the song, the composition is very entertaining.
TrojakEW - Move Forward
My favourite is the beginning. The synth arp as it starts, perfect John Carpenter movie. I like the way the filter opens towards 1:10.
But I don't think the hybrid solution is a good one here. The high strings, in my opinion, are little weak on their own (1:15-).
I get the attempt at a good climax at the end, but it's not really what I expected given the structure of the song so far. I don't like the sharp right-shifted percussive elements either. The many this type of percussive elements at the end are not only a bit alien to the era and style, but it doesn't suit this song either. It's a pity, because the beginning was exciting and it started well. I think the continuation and build up of the synthesizer line building on the suspenseful arpeggios would have been a better option.
Very clean sounding, good overall mix. Nice work.
DocJon - Death By Degrees
Nice synth sounds, the drum part is OK.
The vocals sound good too, nice work. The mix is very good.
Too bad about the rap parts for the retro effect and style.
It sounds good, but a bit strange here. Although if I think about it more and if I look at the subject of the lyrics, I can't say much against rap, since it's more of a modern song. In the 80s, apart from one or two scientists, not many people were still interested in climate change.
EsteveCorbera - Homenatge Als Video Jocs
I liked the idea and the implementation.
I also loved the 8-bit style drum sounds.
Instead of lots of reverb and delay synth sounds, I might have tried a little bit of lead sounds, e.g. with bitcrusher to bring it closer to the drums in sound.
But it doesn't sound bad either. The themes are also varied, they sound perfectly good as a game background.
Chasey24 aka Jerry Payne - Getting Chippy
A very authentic start, the basses start the song well.
Unfortunately, the kick is almost inaudible.
There are good changes in the song. I especially liked it at 2:02.
I like the song, although the arrangement could be a bit better.
StoryGirlOz - Thank You To The Warriors
Overall good song in the requested style. Good synth sounds, but i think there's a lot of phaser and chorus on the background music, it feels a bit washed out.
However, the vocal melody and overall composition is pleasing to me. Nice strong structure, nice melodic ideas. The vocals start off a little shy, but they shouldn't, because later on they sound quite good. There is nothing to be ashamed of.
You wrote: "on a few tracks I've used Ableton's Limiter to add a little extra loudness"
Do not add extra loudness with a limiter (especially for single instrument tracks). The limiter is meant to catch the overs. Use compressor instead.
The balance isn't perfect, it needs a little adjustment in the mix, but it's not bad for a first track overall.
FixInTheMix - Virus
I like the composition, clever instrument choices. What I would have done differently, but this does not detract from its value: the sounds are a bit dry in some places, especially the snare. Great song, composition.
VCA-089 - Inevitable Progress
Perfect mood setting as usual. You create the right atmosphere again.
Very clever sound design. I love the reverb on the drums.
Excellent "travel" music, good background for relaxation.
I miss the catchy lead melody a bit, but it's still a great piece of work.
BenjiRage - Corneria Capcom
A strong start and luckily it stays that strong until the end. Authentic sound, you can't deny that you feel the style. Good sounds, good wide mix, good composition.
The fx at 1:37 (vocal fx w reverb?) is not the best in my opinion, just to write something
JanKoekepan - I am not a Cyborg
It's a very nostalgic song, sometimes I feel downright sad. That's okay, I really like songs like this.
Reading the making of the song, I was amazed. Great work.
I like the lead sínth, the pucky arps, the drums.
