Hello:

I've seen the lists and I'm marked with an "X" for arrangement modification. I didn't know this wasn't allowed; in fact, I indicated it in my mixing process. Sorry for the mistake. I didn't understand this, perhaps due to my poor English level.
I read that drum replacements weren't allowed, nor were instruments added, and that modify the structure of the song wasn't allowed. But I didn't see that vocal repetitions couldn't be used with creative effects. Based on the above, I understand that delays also aren't allowed, which are simply repetitions.
I'm new to the forum, and just to be clear, are only equalizers, compressors, and reverbs allowed?
And another question: how do I indicate that I want to use the wildcard?

Thank you, and I apologize again for the misunderstanding.

¡AH!, OK. I understand that it is automatically activated when you move on to the next round, right?

Thanks, Henrik.

This is explained in minute detail in the Rules and Guidelines (post #006, Mixing and Editing Guidelines, 8th bullet point), the TL;DR Variant (post #003, 4th bullet point) and the Mix Pack bundled "TL;DR Rules.txt" (paragraph 3).

You copied a vocal part into a pure instrumental section, something wasn't there before, therefore changing the arrangement.

Of course delays are allowed. The contestants have artistic freedom in terms of mixing (no limits on used modules/effects, neither hardware nor software) - within given boundaries. See Rules and Guidelines (post #006, Mixing and Editing Guidelines, 2nd bullet point).

As mentioned in post #169, there is an Addendum to the Rule Set, explaining how the Wild Card mechanic works. Should our Song Provider decide to select your entry for Mix Round 2, you can then advance through this particular mechanic.

The original HH is still there, nothing was "shifted", it's just a single delay panned opposite.

Ok. I understand now.
Thank you so much for clarifying.

Hello,

a great and interesting song to mix again this month.

Since most of the tracks were very clean from the start, I tried to add vibe, space, spice, and some kind of fullness in the spectrum, to try to reach that padded ambiance.

I used SSL channel on all tracks for console vibes.
I used Shadow Hills mastering compressor on the mixbus
I compressed the beat with a dbx 165 clone.
I put a lot tapes, on different busses, and some saturation here and there, on busses, usually I did use them on individual tracks.

Here is the mix : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GDGD97fvLZfZekEkU8t8EDjNGVN8Qc2O/view?usp=sharing

Good luck to every participants, I never get tired of this contest, hope everyone had fun.

Cheers

EDIT : hehe I always mix on the verge, dire conditions, and mentally unstable ppl invading my home. Nevermind. But I realize the first plucked synth is kinda absent from the intro, I clearly forgot to do the lastest full A/B check. But I do note it if by chance I reach round 2 ^^
Hi @Davias

I was randomnly checking some mixes and stumbled upon yours.
To me I think yours has a very good balance between the bass and the kick of the drums. The bass in the beginning almost sounds like a big chopper landing, which is pretty cool for the vibe in this song.

One thing I would like to hear a bit more are the high frequency sounds in some of the synths, e.g.: with the "bell" sounds but also on the piano. I think it would make the solo part more interesting when listening to it.

I think I could learn from your low-end balance though. When you have some time, could you check out my mix as well and give me some advice if you feel like doing so? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1duFUhv ... drive_link

Too bad I didn't double-check my Loudness specs thoroughly at the end of my mix. Went a bit beyond the given parameters. Will definitely recheck in the next contest. :tu:
Thanks again for hosting this great platform @Mister Fox and providing such a captivating song @BenjiRage.

Hello @Vanderdude ,

Thanks for your review !
I did use saturation and multiband saturation on the synth bass, also some transient processing, after EQing a bit to avoid clash with the sub bass and removing low-end side content.
I also did boost one the kicks (the lowest one) with a low shelf.
There's a slight sidechaining between the kick n bass.
Also on the mix bus I used a pulltech to level up the low end as I was feeling it was a bit thin (used after the mixbus compressor)

Your mix sounds good to me but indeed I would have boosted the low-end the same I did for my mix, with a pulltech or a baxandall, I used the warmy free EQ for some grit.

I don't know what DAW you're using but since Reaper can normalize the loudness of the render, this rule became a breeze to follow... I just mix at my fav level, and normalize to -16 LUFS-I as the output, usually my peaks aren't too loud due to the use of clippers and limiters to tame crazy tracks.

All the best ;)
Mixing : Reaper, Reason 12, Mixbus 32C 6.2, Cakewalk, Mixcraft 9, Samplitude
Producing : FL Studio, Reason 12, Renoise, Waveform

Hi everyone

Firstly thank you to you all for entering, it's amazing that so many people had a go at mixing my little song, and for your kind words too I'm very humbled! It's great to see so many new users joining too.

Once again it was a hard choice picking a top 15, there were many who missed out narrowly. It was also very interesting regarding the use of monitors/headphones - I had a prediction that nearly all of the tracks I would choose for the top 15 would be primarily mixed on monitors, however, I was pleasantly surprised that this turned out not to be the case. In the end it appears to be an almost 50/50 split between those who mixed mainly on headphones vs mainly on monitors so it definitely presents the argument that, as long as you know the caveats of your system well, mixing on headphones absolutely can turn out great results.

It was similarly interesting to note that out of the mixers who did document their monitoring nearly 1 in 3 used some form of EQ curve or frequency correction on their system. Take this with a pinch of salt, but I did note that some of the mixes with the most obvious frequency issues were ones where correction had been used. That's not to say frequency correction isn't a helpful tool, but if you've always used it on your system (IE: you haven't really ever mixed without it), how do you know you're creating better mixes with it than without? Try turning it off and see how things go - it might be better, it might be worse but you'll at least have a frame of reference, which is what it's all about.

To the feedback...the thing I found I was writing the most was "K2000 piano too quiet in the mid-section", which applied to nearly a quarter of all the mixes. This is an important section in the song so if anyone in the top 15 has had a comment like this, please do take note! Apologies also if anyone's feedback seems short, I've tried not to waffle on too much and 92 mixes was a lot to review! If you have any questions let me know and I'll try to further expand on my comments.

Here is the feedback for everyone in order of submission:

Well done to the top 15, you all produced good mixes with just a few tweaks needed. I hope I've given you enough detail to go off, let me know if you need clarity on any of the points. Looking forward to hearing your revisions!

Thank you once again to everyone who took part.

Best regards,

Benji

Unfortunately all the tracks are time-wise out of position and the song is completely ruined because of it. Purely in terms of the mix, the vocals have some very cool effects going on but they're a bit too loud against the synths and drums. Drums do have good punch though and likewise the synths have some cool effects. Such a shame about the time shifting as this mix had the potential to be very good.
Thank you for feedback ,
Yes I realized that unfortunately after uploaded the song , I took maybe 3 or 4 hours for edit and mix ,so maybe next time, good luck everyone !
