WAV https://www.dropbox.com/s/0y3l02r59q3fc ... e.wav?dl=0
Drums I used parallel compression with a boost around 80Hz and cut at 200Hz on the drum buss.
Individually, on the kick I cut some of the low mid with a boost at 50Hz and 3kHz. On the snare I used a broad eq boost between 850Hz and 3kHz with a cut between 500Hz and 1.5kHz.
Bass - Boost between 300 - 850Hz and a cut at 60Hz
Acoustic guitars - Cut at 600Hz and boost at 3 and 5kHz. Fast compressor to catch the peaks
Solo guitar - RC20 for some warmth
Main vocals - Optical compression, EQ cut around 500Hz and boost between 2 -4kHz. Soundtoys Microshift on the chorus only. Small amount of reverb
Susans vocals - Optical compression and Soundtoys Microshift.
Music box - automated panning
Accordian - RC20 for some old school vibe, some echo
No processing on the 2buss and no drum samples or reinforcing used.
Hope you enjoy it!
2024-NOV-01 Info: Thank you everyone, for making MC100 a resounding success. Please show Songwriting Competition 087 the same love.

Hey there,
this was really well recorded, i'd like to know what was used to record vocals.
I did nearly use no eqs and just used some natural compression for peaks here and there. I used soundtoys chrystalizer on vocals and some Valhalla Vintage Verb and TruVerb ERs only. Thats it. Oh wait, some De-Esser on Vocals and some doublers on guitars. Tried to manage levels, that was the main thing.
Due to time problems, i mixed way too loud, in R2 i would correct this, im sorry.
Great Song

thanks, I do think it could've been recorded much better, but maybe giving the circumstances (me recording myself in my apartment) it's ok-ish...JonasLasse wrote: ↑Sun Oct 21, 2018 14:23 CESTthis was really well recorded, i'd like to know what was used to record vocals.
I cannot speak for Susan, but my vocals (which I still hate the sound of...) were recorded using the Rode NT1 straight into an RME Fireface...

Hi!
Two things where most important to me after listening to the rough:
- It's a duet so she is also very important and shouldnt be mumbling away in the backgroud. I know the recording is noisy and there's nothing you can do about it, but so be it. I'll take a little hiss any day before I let here fade away into the background.
- I tried to make the UFF-TA-TA rythm of the waltz happen. It is very wishy-washy in the rough.

Hi,
found some time to go for a mix. thanx for the tracks.
I did nothing special. Multed bassdrum and snare for variation. Room just for some hit here and there. Basically gettin´ rid of some mud on drums at all.
Guitars: Panning, lowpass and some chorusing effect. DI tracks used once for spacing out.
Accordions handled as guitars. Musicbox got some effects on it, mainly chrystalizer for some ear candy.
Vocals placed in an ambience and backgrounds send into a hall program.
Mostly ssl e on every channel. Some fader riding.
Bus stays the same for all my stuff. ssl comp, eq, inflator.

Hey guys, my first submission! Found the site Friday and so lucky to have such a wonderful song to begin with
My main challenge in this song was to have a fairly modern sound (crisp, solid, open, wide, airy) but not compromise the best vintage elements the client is after. A real life client would know my taste beforehand and would know what to expect
I think I've managed something that I genuinely loved losing myself in listening to, and that the client could also love.
I routed the individual tracks to busses/stems and then "summed" the stems with NLS Nevo. NLS Nevo (with zero drive on everything) is an extremely clean sound, and so what I especially love about it is using Dual Mono instances on the stems to add subtle 3D width even to the mono sources like Direct Drums and Bass. I have the channels in my templates already set up for what works best with what kind of stems.
On the master I have MJUC MK1 mainly for its tone/glue with the needle barely even moving even during the loudest passages. It is followed by SlickEQ to add a little extra low-mid warmth.
Thanks for the beautiful song... this is why I love doing this

Hi !
Interesting thoughts from Mork but I do not really understand:
“Mork”:
-Do you consider the woman's voice to be a duet with the man's voice or not?
in your mix I have the impression to hear each voice as if they were in two different rooms ....
( after the end of the submissions (in a few hours), "FESE" will tell us how he considers these voices in the title structure )
- when at the "three waltz time" what do you want to say exactly ? What did you do ??
Cheers
Franz

Hello
Thanks for the opportunity,
Here's what I did:
Drums: I cut out a lot of low mid freqs, especially around the third octave to mellow the bass drum down, added air to the snare drum and cut out some mid freqs.
Bass: The sustain was a bit long for my taste, I was looking for a pseudo upright feeling so I faded each note by hand.
Acoustic guitars: I added some air.
Electric piano: I used some mid-side eq and compression to get the mid weaker and the sides stronger to open up some space for the vocals.
Vocals: I added some presence to the male voice and some air to the female voice. Then I compressed the vocal bus with 1176. I also slapped an automated multiband limiter to the vocal bus to control the hi-mids.
Most of the other stuff I left as is other than writing some clip gain and volume automation.

Hi,
It was really nice working on a complete different genre. Great song by the way!
Here is my piece:
WAV
MP3
I tried to keep a bit of an analog feel to it by using Airwindows Console plugin.
Drums: mostly SSL channel for EQ and compression
Tambourine: SSL channel
Guitars: some EQ, no re-amping done
Bass: EQ and MaxxBass
Vox: mostly de-essing, EQ and compression on the male vocal. I was trying to balance the male and female vocals a bit more than in the reference mix
Vox, Drums and Guitars had some reverb applied to it.
I used smartEQ to balance, the SSL G comp and some tape saturation on the mix buss.
Cheers,
iMax
