hi,
thanx for sharing the files. struggled a bit this time, cause the tracks are on the rough side. the broken guitar plays a different song. :-)

the good thing here is trying something new. i did the rear bus thing without automation.

drums got some treatment. kick and snare with ambient samples, no room tracks are used.

bass ran through a dbx160 with light compression and ratio.

guitars panned and di used in some spots.

vocals with cla2/cla76 plus a smashed mult.

bus with a real G-FX and UAD 33609 into ozone.

cheers, tippy

Hi all my first mix here, and first mix with the Softube American Class A, it was a lot of fun, a real ROCKER with lots of attitude :tu: I wanted to keep the raw feel and sound of the tracks so I tried to limit my choices and keep it simple. I put Softubes Console 1 (with the API strip) onto every track. This turned out to be more challenging than I thought as all the EQ's are in 2db increments, so you have to make hard choices. So here is the result of those decisions......

Wave File:

FX Subs Mixer View:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/6mvvq1g2z9q64 ... w.png?dl=0

Drums:
All tracks had a UA Studer inserted, the Kick has a SuB KiK sample layered under it, FX used were UA Maximizer, Acme Opticom, UA OceanWay, AMS RMX16.

Bass:
DI was copied to a second track with an amp sim, both tracks mixed to a sub with a UA Chandler Curve Bender, and Decapitator.

Guitars:
All tracks were used, the DI's were sent to amp sims and mixed with the original amp tracks, FX used were UA Dimension D, SoundToys Crystallizer, UA Korg SDD-3000.

Vocals:
UA Manley Vox Box, UA 1176, FX used were UA Lexicon 480L, Waves Doubler, SoundToys Echo Boy and Devil-Loc.

This was a lot of fun to mix as I was out of my comfort zone with my first mix using the API strip. I had a blast and look forward to more mixes here !!!

Kind Regards......

Hi Folks!
I'm new to the Forum and this is my first MixChallenge Submission.
Thank you David Talbot and Delucq for providing the Tracks.

This is my Contribution, I hope you like it!

This is my first attempt trying to mimic the approach of Andrew Scheps in the box.
Here's the routing for those who are not already familiar with it:

Everything is routed to the Mix Buss (through respective Sub-Group-Busses).
Everything BUT the Drums ist routed to the Rear Buss copying exactly the Mix Buss Levels (FX and parallel Processing not included)
What looks very messy in my pictures of the Mix Buss is in fact pretty simple, I just wanted to find a way to set up a little bit of mid-side EQing without owning a MS-EQ, and that incorporated some Channel splitting and combining which thankfully is a breeze in Studio One, but it crowded up the Mix Buss Slots very Quickly.
In fact it's just a
- Dual-Mono Compressor,
-FC670 without compression for colour,
- a mid-side EQ to give a very light top end boost only to the sides,
-a light Stereo Expansion,
-a Pultec Master Eq, and
-a limiter.

This still might seem a lot for the mix Buss, but allows for much gentler processing on the single Tracks.

On the Rear Buss it's Dual Mono 1176s for Parallel Compression.

More on the Routing of the Tracks:
KickIn/Out & Snare Top/Bottom Mics are reduced to Auxes, which are sent to Parallel K&S Compression.
Rest of the Kit is reduced to one Drum Kit Aux including the direct Tom Mics then sent to SEVERAL Parallel Processors such as Parallel Compresssion and distorted Dirt Aux.

Same with Vocals. They're all sent to one Lead, one Backing Aux to be sent further to the Mixbuss and to parallel processes such as parallel Compression, Slapback, Reverb, Harmonizer spread. Special here is a parallel multiband eq to emphasize just the mid-band when more projection is needed. I felt didn't need all of the parallel tracks in the final mix, but still i set them up in case.

The Guitars go direct to the Mixbuss and Rearbuss.
The Mixbuss processing and the parallel Rear Buss was always on during mixing, in order to mix "Into" the sound shaping Master section.

The Tracks:
I did a lot of manual levelling on the Lead vocal Track, because it felt like the Delucq was probably moving a lot in front of the mic.

For the guitars I used the D.I. Tracks and tried to get as close as possible to the original sound, but yet having a bit more control over the sound by using the built in amp simulation in Studio one. First I wanted to blend the sounds, but in the end decided for the reamping.

On the drums no samples. I set up a "fake" stereo Room out of the mono Room track with Open AIR convolution Reverb.
Didn't use the "bleed" tracks.
Also I had a short reverb on snare and toms to give it more "length".
On the Overheads I used a multiband EQ to tame the cymbals a bit.

EQs were only the S1 Fat Channel in "1073"-Mode, the S1 EQ for some surgical EQ, and some Pultecs also from the Fat Channel.
Reverbs on Vocals was Softube TSAR 1R.

For the Bass I only used only the D.I. signal reamped with Ampire.

I hope that answers most questions and in the end I hope you like tje sound of it.

Cheers !
Flo

Hello,

It was largely in the box with the exception of the following:
Vocals: DBX 160X
Bass: Big Muff distortion pedal=>DBX 160X
Parallel Compression (Kick, Snare Top, a little overheads): DBX 160X

The bass was a bit muddy so I distorted it and let it lead the bottom end.
I didnt use the DI guitar tracks with the exception of Guit1 LP, which I heavily distorted with the sans-amp plugin and only kept for the choruses.
Did not use the drums bleed track.
Mono rooms heavily compressed with Red 3 compressor plugin.
Automated the mono room and OH's; brought up the mono room during verse and brought up the OH's in the choruses.
Automated the vocals in chorus to have stereo vocals.

FX:
D-verb for Drums
Slap delay for vocals and lead guitar

I muted the GTRs for a second right before the last chorus for effect.

Hey!
Nice french-garage-foo fighters track we have! Love the snare sample so much!
So here is the FX bay I had during the project, the easiest way to show what I've done:
Image
But will provide few details. Tried to save everything as is, so just necessary (of course for my taste) treatments done. After that what we have:
  • drum bus with a bit of distortion
  • short verb for snare toms and kick, and big one for the whole drum set
  • bass and guitars a bit under C6 side chain to provide space for snare toms and bass drum
  • tried to get something except low end from the bass track
  • added fake room mics for guitars (used verb with a short predelay, to imitate second mic
  • bus comp with really soft settings + j37 tape on master bus
There are my files
MP3
WAV

Thank you for the track, and thank you everyone for your job!

Really enjoy the song! General notes: took inspiration from Nirvana for the lead vocals processing, and referenced the mixing of 70s metal records for the drum and guitars. I mixed the track loud but kept compression light!

The effects chains I used:

Drums:
- Stereo bus compression
- Compression
- Mid Side EQ
- Saturation

Guitars:
- Dynamic EQ
- EQ

Solo guitar:
- Phaser in parallel
- Panning

Bass:
- Compressor
- Dynamic EQ

Lead vocals:
- Pultec EQ
- Parametric EQ
- One knob EQ
- Compressor
- Dynamic EQ
- Reverb
- Slap delay
- Parallel chorus

Backing vocals:
- Widener
- EQ
- Chorus
- Stereo Bus Compression

Master:
- EQ
- Parametric EQ
- Mid Side EQ
- Reverb
- Limiter x 3

Kept it simple and sound, enjoy the mix!

Mix window [1] and [2]

The biggest challenge I think was getting the kick to cut through the mix. I think the game changer was using a drum bus compressor that has a sidechain so the low end transients were less effected (Cakewalk CA-2A). The only mix bus processing was an SSL-style bus comp by Native Instruments called Solid Bus Comp. Slow attack fast release compressing ~2db at the loudest part.
