Hi there,
Here is my mix for round 2:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1m7M9r ... Q0YlScjFbs_
For this second round I wanted the guitars and vocals to come at you a bit more. The drums could also use some extra brightness and excitement. Because everything needed the same I put a 1.2dB hiShelf boost @1355Hz on the master. On the drumbuss I put a subtle bx_saturator for the excitement.
To make the transition to the 1st verse smoother I turned up the reverse vocal reverb I created in the first round.
In the post-chorus before the solo I put a J37 tape sim (7.5IPS + saturation) on the drums to make it trashy. Now when the solo comes in, you get more punch and it feels like the band is at full blast.
Rock on!
2024-NOV-01 Info: Thank you everyone, for making MC100 a resounding success. Please show Songwriting Competition 087 the same love.

Nice mix, Bent. Has a more laid back feel somehow.

Hi, I asked you questions about your mix bus. See here. In my eyes you used a limiter and didn't stick to the -18 dB rms. Wouldn't that be a reason for disqualification?philk wrote: ↑Thu Apr 25, 2019 12:45 CESTHey everyone!
Thanks for picking me in the top 10! Here are my files for round 2.

Worked on your feedback regarding my first mix, checked every group of instruments and tweaked here and there, fixed the problem with the snare and the solo, redid the vocals to get it more gelling with the rest of the mix! I hope you like it.
Thanks for doing this! <3
Cheers, Phil

Here is my attempt at a round 2 submission.
Thank you Morelia for the great song and for choosing my version for round 2. After spending some time listening to the other choices, I don't know how you could pick from SO MANY great options. With that said, I feel extremely proud to be here.

Here's my round 2 notes:
Per your feedback, I tried to get more punch in the drum "skins." I agree that my 1st submission was lacking there.
I ended up automating to bring down the ghost notes and emphasizing the 2 and 4 on the snare. I felt that after compression, the other snare hits were too distracting. I beefed up the snare eq in the 200 Hz range to help give it some extra meat. I also added a transient designer to give it some extra "pop." The kick was eq'd to punch it up and bring it out front of the bass.
Vocals: I could tell from all your feedback that what you wanted was more "attitude" from the vox, so I eliminated the "smooth" verse vox, and tried to give them all some extra tube saturation. I did quite a lot of work on the vocals after round 1. I adjusted eq, compression, added some volume automation, etc...I hope that I didn't make it worse. It's so hard to tell after listening and adjusting for so long. I also tried to get more oomph in the guitars.
After I did my final mix, I listened to some of the other submissions. This will be a really hard decision. I feel that every single mix sounds great. At this point, it seems very subjective. I really appreciate the opportunity, and thanks again for picking me to be in the top 10. That's a big thrill!!! Thanks again for letting me participate!
(PS: I noticed a comment you posted previously where you stated that you had NOT judged the 1st round with volume levels matched. Just curious on how that was possible. As we have all know, louder always "seems" better... but ...maybe not?)

I don't recall saying that but it is true. As there were so many I listened to them as they came in. Then when I listened to larger groups of songs in one sitting I just used a volume fader at my fingertips. It seemed effective enough to remove the louder is better. I'm a little bit OCD when it comes to the louder is better effect and try to avoid it wherever I can. Having said that I didn't want to normalise each song or mess with them in any way to could alter the dynamic range. Volume fader won.
