Maybe we should write in the rules that everyone can break the rules once? So it's fair to everyone.

Hi,
like the band, so did a mix. Dont wonna waste any words about the production, that´s not the goal here.

Leading us in the Joy Division direction makes sense, but i would like to combine that with a bit of a modern aspect.

I processed the heck out of the bassdrum and snare tracks to get some steadiness and control of the ambience.
That should guide the song.

Bass needs some amp sim. Two guitartracks used.
Vocals got the main attention besides the keys. Ignored the non tuned stuff. LeadVocals ran through a real La2a and a Pultec.
Rest is fader riding. GFX comp on the mainbus.

Cheers, tiptoe

Hi Harry Kuuchi,

As Al B rather impolitely said you should take a look at the rules, they are in the link below, you have done it mostly correct but please have a look.

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2

Al B are you contributing a mix this month or just here to troll?

What makes you think I troll? I just say my opinion.

Here's my mix. I used compressor, EQ and reverb.

My Entry:
WAV - https://www.dropbox.com/s/x2cvf5sfvbqxn ... c.wav?dl=0
MP3 - https://www.dropbox.com/s/4ybpvl1o7asw6 ... c.mp3?dl=0

Gain Staging:
All tracks required heavy gain reduction. -8db or more

Editing:
Zero Edits

Mixing:
Used my standard mix template, with NLS SSL across each track and on BUS
Has NY compression sends for each group (VQ4 into CLA-76) and has 2 VERBs (VerbSuite = all channels except: Abbey Road Chamber = Guits and Bass), PLATE (Abbey Road), 2 DELAYs (Repeater) and CRUNCH (Kings Mics + Sausage Fattener + CLA 76) channels

Routing is roughly TRACK + NY to SUBMIX, SUBMIX + FX to 2BUS

VOX - Hand Tuned in Reason 10
CLA-2A
Sends off track - NY
Sends off SUBMIX - PLATE, DELAY, CRUNCH
BVOX - (used auto-tuned files) Stereo Panned. Waves DOUBLER, Black Box Saturator, MU compressor
Sends off tracks - NY
Sends off SUBMIX - PLATE, DELAY, CRUNCH
DRUMS - SUBMIXs for KIK and SNR, [bx E console, CLA-76, Smack Attack on SNR]
SNR delay set at just off tempo of tune. Helps hide timing issues
OHs bx G console, neve and ssl eqs and stress in VMR, Smack Attack
TAMBY - bx E console
Sends off Tracks - NY on KIK, SNR, OHS - VERB, DELAY2 and CRUNCH on SNR-SUBMIX
Sends off SUBMIX - VERB
Logic Comp in DBX mode on SUBMIX
BASS - Rbass and Black Box on SUBMIX
Sends off Tracks - NY
Sends off SUBMIX - VERB
GUIT - bx E Console on each guit (intro guitar and GUIT 1 match, GUIT 2 slightly diff EQ settings)
Panned LR (verb moved to R on intro only to balance GUIT hard left)
on SUBMIX - Channel EQ shape tonal niche, Smack Attack for string and pick noise, Black Box saturator, VSM-3 to widen
Sends off Tracks - NY
Sends off SUBMIX - VERB
KEYS - CLA-76, GTR to CAB with delay in left channel for grit and cut
Sends off Tracks - NY
Sends off SUBMIX - VERB

2BUS - Maaq EQ4, Dangerous EQ

OUTPUT -
2BUS ---> TASCAM M24 --> Liquid Pres (Manly Slam emulation) ---> Joe Meek SC4

I used a good deal of automation to control the flow of the song and mask time/rhythm issues. Listening to the band's released work and sighting Joy Division as a ref led me to the decision to forgo editing and make it feel good as it was played.
The band has a vibe. The piano part is really cool and the lyrical message is moving.
My delay choices on the VOX and SNR are aggressive, but I felt they fit the thing.
Happy listening and THANK YOU for the opportunity.

Hi Harry,

everything is explained in minute detail in the official Rules and Guidelines. You should have read them before you posted. There are also additional "sub-rules" per each challenge in the second post. In case of MC056, this is here-

Additional to that, "Mastering" is not the focus of this game, just mixing. So I don't know why you used DrMS and iZotope Ozone with a mastering preset - which in turn puts you in high risk of a disqualification. Just to point out the obvious things.

Please get acquainted with the rules :educate:
And good luck for all future entries.

I can confirm that the submission is empty.
That would mean: submission is final > render mishap > disqualification.

Al B has been with the Mix Challenge since MC045 (July 2017). It might have come along as impolite, but he's right.

To everyone - please get acquainted with the official Rules and Guidelines first, double check your entries before submitting. We have like 4-6 entries a month where the comment is "I didn't know A" or "I'm not sure if B". If in doubt, reach out and I get back to every question ASAP.

I fixed the file transfer mishap. Seems a bit harsh and unrealistic to disqualify me for a simple file transfer error.

But, whatevs.
