Hello everyone

We only talk about video. Does the audio mix still have something to do with the current competition ?

to "chriswilson83": you are particularly rigid about the rules (MC056) then you should be disqualified
for posting your video, it has nothing to do with this competition, it is a mixing challenge.

Cheers

Franz
Show me the rule in the challenge that states it couldn't be submitted with a video too and results in disqualification and I'll gladly agree and disqualify myself for the month.
*The same can be said about (ahem ;)): Porn, weed, beers, whiskey, more weed... :). I didn't see any of them listed either. But no need to disqualify yourself from this challenge. The more the merrier!

i think this should be fun for everyone. if you like to listen to your mix in sync with the movie, why not? be assured, that this will have no influence on the competition. your mix is all that counts! :phones: dirk.

Dear Dirk Mallwitz and Mix Challenge Community,

Please find my submission for MC057:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/9on9aych7lfp9 ... d.wav?dl=0

Notes on my process (N.B. mixed ITB in Logic Pro X, all tracks were used, no samples added):

Drums: The kick was through a "vintage" limiter, followed by a touch of compression & EQ. The snare was also run through a limiter, compressor, and EQ. (The snare got a pretty significant dip at 470 Hz to kill the boxiness.) Both were panned center. Hi-hat was run through a multi-pressor, and panned at 9 o'clock. Toms 1 & 2 were compressed, EQ'd, and panned hard left & right, respectively. They were also bussed to an aux track with a gated reverb (so no other drums were effected by this instance of reverb). Overheads were compressed and EQ'd, and blended in. The Room track was hit with a transient shaper to hold a longer sustain, followed by compression and EQ, and then a dynamic EQ with a couple of notches in the extreme highs to tame some harshness. The drum buss has an instance of "vintage tape" and "vintage" EQ, and was kissed with a tough of chamber reverb for ambiance.

Bass: EQ, compression, tape saturation, channel strip emulation, and a transient shaper to bring out the attacks a bit.

Rhythm Guitar: EQ, a tiny bit of compression, tape saturation, channel strip emulation, and echo. Followed by reverb for ambiance. Panned hard left.

Guitar Solo: EQ, tape delay, and reverb.

Piano, Organ, Strings: EQ, tape saturation, channel strip emulation, and reverb. Piano is panned at 9 o'clock, organ at 3 o'clock, and strings are center.

Vox (Verse & Chorus): Volume automation was used to even things out, followed by EQ, tape saturation, compression, and reverb. Then I de-essed, and attenuated some of the breaths.

Each track was then printed, tweaked with EQ & compression to give everything its own space, and hit with non-linear summing for color. The master buss has a TG desk emulator, as well as an EQ to help shape the overall curve, followed by a light compressor to keep transients from peaking too high.

Please feel free to let me know if there are any questions/ comments/ concerns.

Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards,
Jeff

Hi everyone!

Here is my submission

Mp3
Wav
Screenshots

In this mix I tried to recreate real live performance and that why I have used a lot of room reverberation and my mix is not so bright us original mix. On the master I have only tape saturation, a bit of eqing to restore high frequensy and some gentle compression.

Good luck to all!

Hello everyone,
My mix is a jazz club mix, Started with,
kick drums, remove some rumble and add a little top @4k.
Snare, I used a 76 attack is 5 and release is very fast, the ratio is 4. about 2/3 dB reduction
followed by EQ cut around honky area -4 dB with small Q.followed by another compression dbx160 wave software.
Hihat, nothing drastic just EQ to remove some low end, that's it.
Drum room, Eq'ed LC around 50 -5 dB around 151hz, little dip -2 around 230hz another cut around 500hz.followed by compression 76.
OH, Eqed and saturation no compression, cut all rumble Low cut @45hz, dip around 200 and 400 Hz. high shelf +3.
Toms, it's a very different sound than the rough mix actually it must be replaced but hay this is against our rules so I keep it as it is with EQ and compression, saturation as well .all drums tracks going to parallel track.
Vocal, I retouch the vocal with Melodyne very little tiny bit, just 1 word.

My submission.

I enjoyed the challenge of making this sound like a live club. I pictured a band on stage with no drum mics, just everyone with their amp and a singer going through a PA. If you're sitting in the right spot in the room, you get lucky with a good mix... With the exception of the snare and keyboard strings, I left everything pretty dry and applied a slapback delay on the whole mix. I like the effect and it helped put me in the room with them.

MP3: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ltok7zj55d9ke ... T.mp3?dl=0

DAW - Reaper
Drums
Bass Drum : 9db boost at 80hz, 10db cut at 300hz, shelved down everything above 3500hz. 4:1 compression 6ms attack and 160ms release. Multiband compression to squash the full mid range.
Snare : High pass at 142hz, 10db cut at 500hz, 5db boost at 4800hz, long reverb mixed low
Tom 1/2 : nothing
HiHat : High pass at 800hz, high end shelf boost
Overhead LR : High pass at 230hz, 3db cut at 445hz, 10:1 compression fast attack, 125ms release
Overhead C : same as OH LR, but mixed 12.5db softer
Room : no fx, mixed at same level as OH Center
Bus: 2.5db boost at 12Khz, mild compression with medium attack and release.

Bass
High pass at 70hz, 3.5db boost at 1200hz for some extra growl out of the bass

Guitar
6db cut with shelf at 130hz, 15db boost at 615hz (for jazzier sound)

Guitar Solo
10db high end shelf reduction to soften the distortion, quarter note delay (I think a live guitarist would do that...)

Electric Piano
High pass at 165hz, 4db boost at 1050hz

Organ
nothing besides pan 50% left

Strings
Long reverb 50% mix

Vocals Verse
High pass at 200hz, 5db cut at 700hz, 4db high shelf boost
Some volume cuts at the transitions between verse and chorus, her phrases overlapped (which would be impossible live)

Vocals Chorus
Same EQ as verse, with added 5db boost at 10Khz
several volume adjustments for certain words that were either sung too softly.

Vocals Bus
2.5:1 compression with 10ms attack, 50ms release (about 3db reduction), another 2.5:1 compression with same attack and release, about 1.5 db reduction, small room reverb mixed about 25%, to simulate a PA reverb
