Hey!
Thanks for the material provided. Making a "live" session with the sampled tracks was pretty fun :)
So I tried to make drums sound as they should, small room, tried to soften them as possible. Same for bass.
Guitar - fake echo to the other channel. Piano - tried to make it clearer, with better attack to cut through mix.
Vocals - small room, a bit of compression, darken a bit, bit hall reverb for choruses

Hi Folks,

thanks Dirk for that interesting Challenge! It was really fun to mix that.

Here is my entry: WAV

I have tried to create a real stage atmosphere. That included a convolution reverb of a jazz chamber, as well as flipping the sides of the drums (which are recording the way you sit and play the drums, not the way a listener would see it on stage, i.e. listener sees HiHat on the right).

Mixed in ProTools with ProTools stock EQ and BF-76 Compressor, Decapitator, MelbaProduction Convolution Reverb, Melodyne and Flux Bittersweet.
Almost every track highpassed and EQ and very subtle excitement added with the Decapitator (except Solo and Bass, which were more heavily treated ;-))
Used Melodyne to fix some tuning issues in the chorus and the high note of the guitar solo.
Chorus on the Piano and an Enhancer on the Strings.
Little additional Delay on the Vocals.
Please let me know if anyone likes more information or screenshots.

Good luck for everyone.
Cheers, Arne

Hey!

This was a fun challenge. Its my first mix done in cubase, so Im way out of my comfort zone, which I was already because of this genre, which Im not very familiar with.

I used super few things, basically some channel strip plugins for broad eq strokes, some compression and saturation here and there and that's it, nothing special. Reverb and delay on the guitar and vocals are abbey roads chambers and valhalladelay.

I phase aligned the drums and muted the snare close mic and the oh m because of the weird phasing cymbal stuff. I think due to the room and oh sound I did get away with that.

the bus has some flavor from the townhouse ssl comp and an ampex tape machine.

Cheers, Phil

I really wanted to give this song the feel of being a live performance in a jazz club. I spent a lot of time with eyes closed to imagine that's where I was. It took a lot of effort to attempt to keep everything from feeling overly processed, which - in fact - it actually was.

Mix Bus : bx_digital V3 for mild tone shaping & stereo widening / Black Box Analog for saturation / Gullfoss to clean up low mids / bx_townhouse for a bit of glue (-1 to -2 dB gain reduction) / Acon Digital Verberate for a little "Jazz Room" feel.

CLA MixHub was used on all the busses.

Vocals : Vox-verse & chorus - I used MV2 (Waves) for leveling, Maag EQ4 for air, & CLA-76 for comp. On the Vocal bus - CLA MixHub, dearVR for room placement, Noveltech Vocal Enhancer for clarity, Pro Audio DSM V3 for deessing, TuCo (Sonimus) for additional compression, & MDynamicEQ for additional tonal fixing.

Bass : MV2 for leveling, CLA MixHub, ToneSpot Bass Express (Parrallel @ 30%) for a little tone scooping & drive, smartComp (sidechain ducking triggered by Kick), MDynamicEQ for Hi-Pass & low mid control, Gullfoss for more low mid control, & bx_cleensweep for another hi pass @ 60 Hz.

Drums : Fairly simple EQ & compresion - bx_console SSL 4000 E on Kick & Snare, UltraChannel on Tom 1 & 2 with Satson CS on Tom bus

Guits, Keys, & Strings : dearVR for room placement, a bit of chorus on Piano & Organ, EQ & compression - Fairly simple

Hi,

entry no. onebazillionandone (I didn't actually count ;) ):
WAV: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1BihzL ... NeP9TTxmQl
MP3: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hgHcyv ... sp=sharing

Cool vocal performance and a bunch of MIDI. The dynamics are all over the place and don't play together at all. The thing that suprised me the most was the original mix, which tried to turn this production into some kind of crunchy, slamming pop rock. So with the brief in mind (Jazz Club)I went in and began to look for what the parts where "telling" me. In the end I went for a very hifi sound, always trying to stay true to the parts I liked about the original and to what seemed important to the vision. There's waaay to much going on to list here, but as always, ask if there are any questions. Mixed in Reaper but I saw someone used MIxbus, which I would have loved to use for this, but it's just such a PITA to work with.

Cheers
Mork

Hi,

Thank you for the nice song and the opportunity to try a different genre for this month's challenge.

Here is my mix:

WAV
MP3

In general, there was only basic processing done, as the goal for me was to focus more on the club atmosphere, which I found suprisingly difficult to achieve (or at least what I imagined it should sound like).

Drums: Waves SSL E channel on each track for EQ and compression, Airwindows FathomFive on the Kick
Bass: Neutron 2 for EQ, compression and saturation
Guitars: Scheps Omni Channel (EQ/Compression), Waves GTR delay for the solo part
Keys: Neutron 2 for EQ, compression and saturation
Strings: smartEQ2 and Neutron 2 compressor, Waves VEQ3 for additional adjustments
Vox: Scheps Omni Channel (EQ/Compression), Soundtoys Litte Plate for reverb

2bus: Airwindws Console5, SSL G Bus compressor, Airwindow ToTape5, Museq for some tonal balancing and Ozone 8 Imager to widen the stereo image a bit

For the instruments I used Waves IR-L convolution reverb, loading the Birdland impulse response and preset settings.

Cheers!

Now I have time it is time for me to write what I have used.
First DAW is Reason 10. Yes that Reason 10 people call it a toy.
However, it is a mixture of plugin and builtin SSL which I used to mix this song. lets start from Kick shall we?

Kick, Buitlin SSL EQ, SSL Comp send to distressor. insert I have SPL transient desinger, little lab VOG, and little lab IBP.
Snare, Builtin SSL EQ, send to distressor and abbyroad studio chamber. insert I have harrison ava legacy EQ and transient designer. I haven't used compressor I didn't feel like it.
Except Toms I used the builtin SSL EQ not even a comp. However I used a builtin comp on Toms and the builtin SSL EQ then send it to a chamber.

Bass, SSL EQ Send to little Room verb like office. Just to make the bass a little bit far. and then send it to tube. Insert I have 1176, waves omni channel, and saturation plugin.

B3, fairchild, nomad tube, harrison eq ava. F6 waves.

Piano, SSL EQ, insert I used spider merger and splitter to split the signal into two and use delay to creat hass effect then send to bus and on the bus I Have Harrison EQ and Seventh heaven pro room verb.

guitar fair child and builtin EQ.

Please forgive me I will continue later.

Hello.

Great song and really professional productuon and arrangement. It was a pleasure to work on this.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mTrTGC ... p=drivesdk

See above link for my 24 bit 48k wav file.

I used protools to mix. I applied nebula adam b mfc or 4k console input to each track dependong on brightness. Kick and snare i used bx channel e for eq and i use lindel neve 2256 compressor which has a slow attack unlike the actual unit on kick. I used spl tranisent shaper and spl deverb on the kick and snare to remove some of he sustain. Room mic had bf76 all buttons in compression in light amounts. Group processing for drums included empircal labs arouser.

Bass had certain fequencies i wanted to attenuate do i uaed bx console focusrite which has full spectrum availble to the deesser. I used the de esser on certain. Freq on bass that caused some ssues. I used high shelf on bass to add some definition. I also had extremely light chorus modulation on the bass.

Piano and organ was eq with fabfilter and had light compression. It has a slight auto panning.

Guitr has a clean s gear emulation. The fx on the rack our chorus delay and reverb. The solo guitar has light echo added.

Strings have delay added with fabfilter timeless. I added ver slight vibrato effect.

Vocals had tim p la3a emulation with about 8 db of gain reduction. I also used the nectar clarity eq. And deesser.

Sends on all track were to the cupwise plates of legend and subspace. Bus processing includes tim p l bus comp and pre amp. I also used shadow hills transformer on master bus.i used alex b console emulations

I added a lot of volume automation as well as some panning and other automation. There are a lot of minor automation changes throughout the song to try to balance. I really hope you enjoy my mix and i can have an opportunity to help improve further in round 2. Thanks so much.
