Mix Challenge

Hi,

this time it was a very interesting challenge to mix the song that it sounds like a small jazzclub concert!

I concentrated my mix on the positions of the instruments, an the "near factor" how requested.

Every track got a little bit of EQ and Comp by CLA MixHub by Waves.

On the drums i insert a bit more room to the snare. the rest it`s from the original.
on bass the CLA bass was used to give more pressure and directness.

the vox got a bit different bx_roomMS to sound more compareble. The Rythm and Vox group got a SPL TwinTube so the Masterbus to glue the mix a little bit.

All Sources through TASCAM MODEL 24 mixer, EQ, stereo and balance
And run through PULTEC TUBE emulation PREAMPS on LS56

MIXDOWNS from DRUMS, GUITAR, ORGAN and STRINGS taken from this process, plus VEQ4 on Kik, Snr and Guits, and RBASS on Kik, Delay and aggresive EQ, and Sausage Fattener on GUIT SOLO

Stage 2
MIXDOWNS added to:

Vocals (tuned, slightly in REASON)
run through CLA-2a and BX_N Console EQ
NY Comp on DRUMS, BASS, GUIT, KEYS, ORGAN, STRINGS, VOX
Vox have plate and very tiny delay.
Verbsuite on whole mix, sent to varying degrees.

Maybe a few more moves, but im out of time to describe!

I had a real challenge today.
A mix of a beautiful song that I started this afternoon (Wednesday), an ear infection, a new DAW (I'm testing Studio One now. Logic Pro X has too many bugs lately).
...and it’s my first time when i mixed acoustic drums.

As I wrote, I made the mix in Studio One 4.
Plugins:
On all channels: Brainworx SSL4000e
EQ: Acustica Audio Magenta and Titanium, DAW Eq for removing resonances.
Aux: Eventide H3000 and UltraReverb, SlateDigital VerbSuite
Comp: Acustica Audio Titanium, Slate Digital Distressor, 1176
Other: Eiosis E2Deesser, SPL Transint Designer, Slate Digital VirtualMixRack, VU Meter from TBProAudio

Was a pleasure to mix these tracks, am a huge jazzhead. Did most of the work in the past 48 hours and managed to get it in on time this month! I used Postmodern Jukebox's Creep as a main reference for the vocal and also referenced Daft Punk's Random Access Memories, The Game of Love (which is in the same key) to get mix ideas for the instrumentation. I aimed to make the tone warm and round as possible. I kept the effects on the drier side. Would love feedback and will return the favor!

Verse Vocals: Spent most of my time here -- I aimed to capture the complexity of the vocalist's tone and use a series of plugins in subtle ways to shape it
PurestGain (automation on the input gain throughout)
PTEq-X (Mostly low passing, a small high pass, some tonal shaping)
Fruity Compressor (Used for expansion)
TDR Nova (Dynamic EQ on highs)
Parallel chain in Patcher: RubyTube Saturation with ReaGate, High Pass EQ and Waves DeEsser (Added a touch of sizzle)
Airwindows Cojones
Klanghelm DC1A2 (very light setting)
ComBear (Parallel Compression)
TDR Nova (Dynamic EQ low mids)

Verse Vocal FX: DUB II Delay (slap delay), OldSkoolVerb, TAL Reverb II (plate reverb)

Pitcher (only to correct the second "come back")
La Petite Excite (added low end harmonics)

Fruity Compressor (Used for expansion)
TDR Nova (Dynamic EQ on low mids, mids and 4k)

Didn't need to process any individual tracks except for toms, where I added RoughRider, Molot, and PTEq-X
On a drum mixbus I used a PTEq-X to round out the low end and Molot for parallel compression

unfortunately, a couple of the best mixes were delivered again in insufficient format, e.g. only 44.1 sample rate, or 16bit.
minimum is 48/24 as far as I have understood.
many mixes have unchecked start, with some noises at the beginning.
good luck anyway, this was super interesting.
