SONGWRITING COMPETITION - SWC084 August 2024 - preparation phase

by Mister Fox
It is the 25th August 2024, 04:15 UTC+2/CEST - this month's Songwriting Competition has official ended

STATISTICS:
  • If I didn't miscount, we have 9 submissions this month (1 entry less than last month, and also 2 entries less than August 2023)
  • We have 0 submission after the deadline (as of 25-AUG-2024 04:15 UTC+2/CEST)
  • We have 0 submissions that has been disqualified (production released outside of the game's timeframe)
  • We have 1 submissions that has been withdrawn (counts as participation, but can't be voted for)
  • The "staff balancing vote" add-on rule does not apply (special game mechanics do apply)
  • "Sole Winners Podium" rule (equal or less than eight participants results in a single winner) does not apply (3-position Winners Podium)

:arrow_right: How do we go from there?

Over the course of the next (hopefully) 24-48 hours (usually up to 6-12 hours maximum after the game has ended), I'll gather all links into one post and hot-link to that from the first post of the thread. Please, no more changes to your entries, but please do check your links that these entries are accessible and downloadable. We then perform with the final feedback and "public vote" system.

We have 9 official participants, however only 8 entries can be voted for. We are adapting the overhauled vote mechanic, as talked about in the following news blog:

Songwriting Competition - game mechanic changes: Voting Process (October 2022 Update)
(Info: I am aware that the Rule Book has not been properly updated yet. Time constraints, apologies for the inconvenience)

Summarized:
 ! Bonus Info
:arrow_right: IMPORTANT NOTE - PLEASE READ BEFORE CASTING YOUR VOTE:

This month marks a special occasion in terms of giving feedback and casting your vote. Unfortunately, one participant had to withdraw for the feedback process due to time constraints. We were kindly informed of this beforehand.

Since only going by 08 entries prior to the voting mechanic would affect the size of the Winners Podium, and also the just introduced "bonus licenses for low placed entries" game mechanic that we're currently testing, I am treating this month's Songwriting Competition like any other with 09 or more entries.

You are still asked to give feedback and cast a vote to your "Top 5" entries. However, please ignore this one withdrawn entry for your vote / ranking. This entry will be listed in the "WIthdrawn" section.

You are free to decide if you want to give feedback and final words of encouragement to this participant's song or not, as there is no guarantee that you will get any assessment in return. Whatever you will decide in this particular case, it will not result in a Bonus Point deduction if you do not give additional remarks to this entry.

Summary of the Game Mechanic:
  • Participants can (and must) vote for their Top 5 entries (tiered mechanic).
  • You're furthermore asked to please reflect on your experience this month (2-3 paragraphs max), what you have learned, what you would like to do different in the future, etc. (personal growth)
  • You are also asked to give feedback to at least five (number: 5) entries (tiered mechanic) -- things that stood out to you, providing some final thoughts and constructive feedback for possible improvements. This adds to the learning experience of our community. It is recommended that these entries are outside of your personal "top entry" voting.
  • Have the chance to get additional bonus points if you decide to invest the time to provide more constructive feedback than the requested minimum. It must be more than just "nice production, please keep up the good work" however. This is to boost more interaction and can balance out your overall points on the score sheet. (get 1 point if you give constructive feedback to 1-2 more participant, get 2 points if you give helpful feedback for everyone)
  • The "Voting Process" mechanic is mandatory for all participants, and the only criteria to drop out of the game by not partaking. Please don't just collect feedback, and not give back to the community.
  • The overall "Bonus Point" mechanic still applies. Please update your posts with proper production documentation, most notably regarding whom you have collaborated with (as in: proper credits -- not doing so will result in a 2pt deduction on the score sheet at the end of the game). Please also make your entries downloadable, or provide an additional download link if not existing already. You got until the voting period has ended.
Please cast your vote (not the feedback) in collective form through the "spoiler text" bbcode (button on the WYSIWYG editor that features the orange triangle with an exclamation mark in it). Please use the forum username of the participant to make it easier during the score collection to address what vote belongs to whom.
.

⚠ Moderation Message from Mister Fox
For transparency:

The staff (Mister Fox) will not give feedback to all entries and/or cast a vote this month.

(unless there is a tie that can not be broken otherwise)

Feedback from non-participants and/or collaborators is highly encouraged (voting not needed!). The same goes for entries after the deadline, or those that sadly do not count for the current running game (even if you've exceeded the deadline, why not post your entry regardless?). Musicians and Engineers are always after constructive criticism. This is what this forum is about.

Have some general feedback? Please provide that here:
Songwriting Competition - General Gossip Thread, or on Discord.

Please make sure your files are accessible, and please have an eye on this thread! :tu:

A small request for @PonySho:

Could you kindly add some more information to your original post regarding your other instruments? I assume that you've played the guitars yourself and didn't use any VSTi or loops. And I'd love to read up a tad more on your used guitars (just the type would suffice) and maybe the occasional amp that you used.

Furthermore, if you consider this to be a "demo mix"... that is far from being bad. The guitars are a touch loud (personal opinion), and the bass gets a bit lost on small speakers. But other than that - no complaints. Also: the Songwriting Competition tries to push you to do both... interesting songwriting, but also create balanced and enjoyable mixes.

Thank you very much.

:arrow_right: Quick reminder:
Including today, 4 days left to submit your feedback and cast your vote. So far, nobody has done that.

I'm just slightly starting to get worried, that's all.

Mr Fox, to be honest, this is my first time in this challenge, and I'm finding the voting/feedback process a little complicated, coupled with my concern that if I screw it up, I might get disqualified. Here's what I'm not sure about:

1. Feedback - do I give this to the original posts or to the group you've compiled above?
2. Voting - I understand it's done through the spoiler link but doesn't this just post it back to the forum? The votes should be confidential to be fair; I don't want to mess this up.
3. Reflection - does what I wrote in my original song post suffice, or must I rewrite/elaborate?

I'd be grateful if you could clarify this for me - thank you!

Hello PonySho,

if you're unsure, you can have a look at last month's competition and votes. The votes start here:
viewtopic.php?p=17490#p17490

1. You give your feedback in one new reply to this thread; no need to reply to a specific posting or to quote any posting before.

2. The votes are not confidential, they are posted back to the forum, just in spoiler tags.

3. Reflection: This is something different than the (updated) documentation in your original post. The documentation is about what gear you used (and perhaps why). The reflection is one or two paragraphs about what you learned during the production process or what you would do differently. Something like "I wanted to archieve this ... I learned that it is difficult to ... Next time, I will try to ...".

A pretty good example IMHO is the first paragraph of TrojakEW's post from last month:
viewtopic.php?p=17493#p17493

I hope this helps.

Things I have learned during this month’s competition:
This month I learned (struggled!) how to create a ‘chorus’ of voices from a single instance of a voice, with variable success. There is a host plugin in Cubase which attempts to do this but it did not sound at all good on the bagpipes patch I was using. However an old freebie plugin, Eventide Quadravox, was more convincing. I think next time I will just duplicate the track lots of times and experiment with panning, small delays and modulation to create the same effect

My Reflection
This is my first time in a song competition on Mix Challenge. I'm grateful for the opportunity because it pushed me to be productive. I wrote the chords/sang the melody on an acoustic guitar in just a few minutes, initially. Then, I refined the tune and wrote some lyrics. As I said in my initial post, I really didn't like the song later in the process because it sounded way too cliched, but I believe there's great value in seeing stuff through to the end.
I also wrote this song style (not my chosen style) as a personal challenge to create something of substance within a limited time frame. I usually stress over the details, particularly with mixing/balancing, but I just let that go for this project - it was quite uncomfortable for me. My mix is very substandard, as is the production, lyric choice, vocal phrasing and arrangement.
I know this sounds like an apology for turning out substandard work, but when you work in the mindset of 'limitation leads to innovation,' with a clear mandate (write a radio-friendly song in 5 minutes) it can be quite revealing what you're forced to create. For example, besides the time limit to write the song, I limited the range of instruments and didn't allow myself to use any ear candy sounds. I limited myself to one drum loop with a couple of drum fills. I didn't allow myself to use any other voices but my own.
Anyway, I had fun, and it was satisfying to finish and submit something. I especially enjoyed hearing the music of others on the forum. It's fascinating to me how we've all interpreted and been inspired to create a piece of music from a single photo.
Great work, everybody. I take my figurative hat off to you all!
