A few word about this month's theme:
Staff (Mister Fox) wrote:Please imagine the following:

An independent video game company is reaching out to you. They're currently in the process of creating a fighting game. Their idea is to fuse Sci-Fi elements with Fantasy, but they didn't set a definite story and/or setting yet. What they do know, is that the stages can be pretty much everywhere. From a pier at the ocean, to moving vehicles, to an old castle ruin, a street brawl, to a battlefield in the middle of a nuclear fallout, down to a secret base, etc. The fighting stages will be on various places all over the planet. Their roster will be about 12-16 fighters, the movement of these characters will be smooth and fast - depending on their heritage. But the game won't be an arcade-like hit-combo machine. What they do look for, are inspiration that they can draw from the music in order to model their fighting stages and characters. So they're reaching out to musicians to create something based upon this (agreeable) vague concept, and hope for a unique spin.

What they do not want to hear, is a pure chiptune or a sole orchestral soundtrack though. Neither do they want to hear music reiterations of well known established Japanese fighting games, or a pure heavy metal soundtrack. They want to hear you taking a risk and move things forward into the modern age. They would like to hear a blend of traditional instruments supported by modern sounds and samples. Imagine two characters standing opposite to each other, highly trained in their personal skills, no black or white storytelling, only two huge forces battling with one another in this possible deadly dance.

Your task for this Songwriting Competition:

Create a music production in any genre that you feel like. Write something that you'd love to hear yourself in a new fighting game that might become the next big game IP. You can think up of any character, you can think up of any stage. In the end, it just has to work as an overall concept, sound interesting yet not annoying during the game play, so that you don't just turn off the music and have to reach for something else.

The music doesn't need to have a seamless loop. Just write a song that you would put into your CD or MP3 player and enjoy.

Good luck! :phones:

Songwriting Add-On Rules:
  • You should try to blend classical instruments with modern ones, maybe do some unexpected sound design
  • you can use any tool that is at your disposal (samples, virtual instruments and/or real instruments)
  • It is recommended to not go higher than -14LUFS SLk (avg) or K-12v1 (avg) in terms of perceived loudness. Music doesn't have to be squashed to bits in order to be impactful
  • for newcomers: no cover version or remixes

Hi Everyone,

My Entry is errr...creatively entitled 'Fight!'

I tried to make an old video game sound that blended into a more normal track. I realised after reading the brief I kinda screwed up a bit as its pretty heavy metal too :uhuhuh:  however as I spent the time on it still wanted to submit rather than press delete and forget it!

Here are screenshots of the arrange window and the effects / channels used.

Not sure I'm going to finish. Had an ambitious idea, and a lot going on in my world to take care of. The commitments to my physical world won out.
We'll see what happens, though. This Viennese (waltz) is turning out rather nice, I'll finish it at some point even after the fact.

Some time in the future, ballroom dance could make a solid theme for a challenge.
(my other idea was a samba, could make for an interesting stage in a fighting game.)
