Let's make it over a 10 8-)

Hey everybody!

Mister Fox mentioned in the mix challenge forum the songwriting competition was a bit light in entries so I decided to slap something together over the weekend. Here is my entry "Sky Vs. Sea"

mp3: https://www.dropbox.com/s/l5fc896qfk3hv ... a.mp3?dl=0
wav: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1tknhstmdxfg0 ... a.wav?dl=0

Concept:

I wanted it to feel like video game music and have a bit of a "chiptune" vibe while not feeling like it was constrained to the limitations of a primitive 8-bit audio system. There are two main lead synth lines (doubled by guitar). Each synth line represents a combatant, one sea-based, one air-based. They were written so that they could stand on their own fairly well independently but also be played together representing an active fight. The piece starts with a marching snare part symbolizing a call to battle and samples representing sonar and radar pings.

DAW:

I composed the song in Ableton Live and mixed it in Digital Performer.

Instruments:

All of the synths are out of the box Ableton Live sounds
Addictive Drums
An electric guitar run through Amplitube 4

Samples:

I used a handful of samples from a free Loopmasters pack that I got bundled with something or other (maybe my grid controller).

Performance:

Everything was performed on a Novation Launchpad Pro except for the guitar parts.

I guess I missed my chance to say "this one goes to 11."
Neat theme, I'm excited to hear all of the entries.
And without further ado, I present

Sorry the submission post is marked after 11:59... I do hope you'll forgive me.

My take on the theme created a stage in the abandoned ballroom of an old mansion. I'm not sure I captured that well, but I'm still quite happy with the waltz that came out of it. I hope that y'all enjoy it too, despite my failures in recording and mixing.

It is the 25th February 2019, 1:20am GMT+1/CET - this month's Songwriting Competition has official ended

For the first time in the existence of the Songwriting Competition, we exceeded 10 entries (in fact, we have 13!). Thank you so, so much for your participation. Also, hello and welcome to the new participants.

We had 13 participants, which is 6 entries more compared to last month (7 entries).
The "staff balancing vote" add-on rule does not apply
"Sole Winners Podium" rule (equal or less than seven participants results in a single winner) does not apply. (regular 3-position Winners Podium)

There were no productions submitted after the deadline (I consider your upload on 12:00am a server glitch, Leonard :tu: ).

 How do we go from there?

Over the course of the next (hopefully) 24-48 hours, I'll gather all links into one post and hot-link to that from the first post of the thread. So please, check your links again. Mistakes and hiccups do happen on the internet. We then perform with the "public vote" system.

We have 13 participants.
That means that each participant can vote for 10 tracks, the staff will not cast a balance vote.

The Top 10 list can look something like this:
01 (10 pts) - Mr Moon
02 (9 pts) - Mr Sun
03 (8 pts) - Mrs Venus
04 (7 pts) - Mr Mars and his companions
05 (6 pts) - Mr Hale-Bopp
06 (5 pts) - The Rings of Saturn
07 (4 pts) - Mrs Gaia
08 (3 pts) - Cassini–Huygens
09 (2 pts) - Mr Pluto (I feel sorry for you)
10 (1 pts) - "Planet Nine"
How your voting could look like, please take a look at these posts (sans the technical information):
viewtopic.php?p=2311#p2311
viewtopic.php?p=2478#p2478
viewtopic.php?p=2819#p2819
viewtopic.php?p=3522#p3522

Please also take note of the Rules and Guidelines on giving feedback (mandatory for all participants, failing to do so results in a disqualification). We have more than 10 participants this month, you can still cast your top 10, but feedback should not be cut short.

Feedback from non-participants is highly encouraged (voting not needed!). Musicians and Engineers are always after constructive criticism. This is what this forum is about.

If you have an idea for a theme/genre or want to see a specific theme tackled in the future, please voice your opinion here:
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=168

If the future of the Songwriting Competition is >10 participants (which I'd love to see!), then let's talk about maybe changing the voting system to top amount-of-participants. In case of February 2019, that would have been "13 entries ranked in order", instead of a simplified Top 10.

Please voice your feedback/opinion/concerns here:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=97

Please have an eye on this thread! :tu:

IMPORTANT: Due February being the shortest month of the year, that is only 5 days!

There is a GLOBAL COUNTDOWN to check for deadlines.
Just follow this link: Global Countdown (on homepage)

Please consult the last post of how your vote could look like (which links to more sources).

To make it easier on yourself, and more helpful for each participant, maybe focus on the overall production value. What you really liked with the song, what you'd like to see improved, etc.

SWC018 participants giving feedback to each other (to every participant) and casting a Top 10 vote is mandatory, else you will be disqualified

Good luck to all participants! :tu:

Alrighty, somebody has to be the first to give feedback. It might as well be me I suppose :phones:

This was tough. Everybody did a really great job. I had to lean on production quality and thematic fit to break a lot of ties. My final ranking doesn’t reflect how well I like the songs personally. I tried to balance my personal taste with how well I felt the song fit the theme and how well they were produced.

Jilliam - Trapped Within The Total Recall - Reality

I think this fits the theme nicely. I could picture this in a fighting game. I particularly like the asian-sounding stringed instrument part (not sure what instrument that is). There are some things in the production that I think could be improved. It sounds a bit harsh in the upper midrange to me. Maybe check your EQ/Filter settings to see if you can pull some of the harshness out. Also, while I like the pumping compression and I think it’s an important part of your production, I think maybe it’s a tad over the top.

The NeverScene - Infernal Waste

I can definitely hear this in a video game - it’s very cinematic. The genre reads horror to me - so maybe it would fit a fairly dark and bloody fighting game. I really like the guitar work. The song definitely comes to life once the guitar comes in. I think maybe the orchestrated parts could use more panning to create additional stereo interest. It feels a bit mono to me.

DoctorBob - Fight For Flight

I think this fits the theme. My biggest piece of feedback on this piece is that there is a TON going on both in terms of sounds and the music. I find it to be hard to follow. I think it could either use some simplification or the production could be altered to help my ear know where to focus. It’s hard to know what I should be paying attention to at any given time. I do like how the intensity builds as the piece progresses.

RichardClarke - Fight!

Once this kicks in, it definitely feels like it could be in a fighting game. The intro and first break are kind of interesting against the rest. They sound very major and happy while the guitar part sounds very minor and dark. To me, the end effect is a bit scary clown / funhouse.

Ollyaudio - Its Dawn

I like your piece - it’s really excellent. I’m not 100% convinced it fits the theme though. It’s a bit like a fight broke out at the spa. I’m like “Will you two stop fighting over there? I’m trying to get a hot stone massage over here!”. Also, this sounds a tad over-compressed to me. In this style, I think I’d like to hear a bit more dynamic range. Really good job overall!

ontrackp - It’s Not A Dream

This sounds like it belongs in a game. It has a bit of a sci-fi feel to me. Loving the synth sounds, not sure if that’s the K2000 you were talking about or something else but VERY tasty - makes me think of Blade Runner. I think I’d like to hear the guitar as sounding a bit more up front at times.

andreas.bollden - Final Battle

Super cinematic. I could hear this in a Warcraft game (the RTS variety, not MMORPG). Overall really nicely produced too. My biggest bit of feedback is that the rapid fire double bass part that comes in at 1:28 becomes fatiguing after awhile. I think it should be shorter or broken up a bit maybe.

Clueless - Fighting Game

I dig it. I like how the extreme syncopation supports the concept of a fighting game where rapid unexpected movements are part of the game. I think this really works great.

TrojakEQ - Pit of Torment

I love the vocal prompts. It perfectly illustrates how this piece would fit into the game. I think it’s pretty spot on all around.

toadhjo - Spar in the Bazaar

This is by far my favorite piece of music in the competition. This is the one I would listen to later. I like how the market sounds create a sense of place. I love the composition, the sounds are great. From a production standpoint, my only feedback is that the mix leans pretty hard left for a lot of the song. It’s a bit distracting with headphones (not so much on speakers). The only reason I’m not ranking this entry in first place is that I think the connection to the theme is tenuous. You told a good story but when I close my eyes, I don’t picture fighting. I picture people sitting at sidewalk cafes drinking coffee and enjoying a sunny morning.

The Exponent - What are you afraid of

This is a cool piece. It’s very cinematic. The production comes across as papery thin and midrange heavy to me in places - might check your EQ settings. Solid overall.

Leonaard Bowman - Dueling, Dancing

This is totally the music you would hear when going to the world map in a fantasy RPG. It doesn’t completely read fighting game to me but it definitely reads video game. Nice work!

Here's my top 10 (1 being best):

1. TrojakEQ - Pit of Torment (10 pts)
2. Clueless - Fighting Game (9 pts)
3. toadhjo - Spar in the Bazaar (8 pts)
4. The NeverScene - Infernal Waste (7 pts)
5. andreas.bollden - Final Battle (6 pts)
6. Leonaard Bowman - Dueling, Dancing (5 pts)
7. The Exponent - What are you afraid of (4 pts)
8. ontrackp - It’s Not A Dream (3 pts)
9. Ollyaudio - Its Dawn (2 pts)
10. Jilliam - Trapped Within The Total Recall - Reality (1 pts)

Hi All!

Might as well rip the band aid off as well! Here is my results and feedback. As often is, the top few were extremely close and possibly interchangeable at times for me. So I have tried my best here arrange them in order. I think there was some great efforts and very professional ones and I was very inspired and definitely humbled by a lot of what I heard!

Results
10pts - TrojakEW
9pts - The NeverScene
8pts - The Exponent
7pts - Ontrackp
6pts - Andreas Bollden
5pts - DoctorBob
4pts - Jilliam
3pts - Toadhjo
2pts - Clueless
1pt - Upright Joe

Jilliam
Really like the little lead line, could have made it louder and done more of this! Definitely feels like you are entering the liar of a Boss

TheNeverScene
Totally video game music, I love all the transitions and efforts to bring new melodies and ideas in. Could have had some stronger motifs at times but overall an awesome effort.

DoctorBob
Love the vocals at the beginning (choral and growl), definitely comes in like a video game. Like the lead guitar and violin too, the mix could have had more bass end drive and I think it would have worked more. Another one with some nice transitions.

OllyAudio
Not fighting music would be my concern, was a little too laid back and spiritual sounding. However I like the some of the sounds you used and it flowed nicely as a piece of music generally. It just needed a bit more to get it going at times.

ontrackp
Love the intro and the voice. It really picks up at the beginning and has lots of cool melodies and counter melodies, well composed! Also has nice feeling of suspense and some great transitions, only complaint maybe a slightly stronger motif at times would be nice and not quite fighting music.

Andreas Bollden
Love the cello at the beginning, very movie soundscape as it builds in. It is not fighting music but you feel that one is going to break out any moment and that keeps it in the brief for me. At times could do with some stronger motifs to hook you in, a more lead lines.

Clueless
A little too abstract for me at times and does not feel like a fighting game track too me. Nice sounds as a general sound collage with a bit of an aphex twin vibe and I like what you are trying if it was in a different context. I do hear some eastern melodies which helps me think of video games at times but it just struggles to hold my attention to the end. It needs something to hook me in more!

TrojakEW
Vocals are great (choir and bad guys!). I like how you try to build it up into rounds like a video game. I really get a visual image in my minds eye of whats happening. It could do with some more interesting motifs at time. I like the feeling of the pick up in tempo at time.

toadhjo
I really like the crowd and feel like I am in a real sparring environment. I love the ha! vox at the beginning and how you bring it in. My main complaint would be the tempo could do with picking up, same with the crowd, you need some intensity and I feel like its not really a fight scene after a while. I love the sounds you used and the idea though, it was very original.

The Exponent
Feel really nice and epic at the beginning. I like the electronic vibe along the orchestral and how parts morph. Also the lead lines are fantastic, could do with more bass behind things at time for me and this is what let it down a little for me. Very different approach the others but I feel it fits the original brief very well too.

UprightJoe
Nice feeling of tension and release at the beginning. It was not quite fighting music for me, it needed a few more BPM for some adrenaline. Some nice hooky melodies which I always want and felt like a song more than a sound collage. Just was a bit too poppy in the melody to fit the brief well for me. It needed some aggression and more excitement in the arrangement at times.

Leonard Bowman
I thought it was nicely balanced and I like that there were a lot of transitions and changes in melodies. It wasn't quite fighting music to me though and that's where it misses the brief. I don't feel the showdown aspect.
